To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, people packed the riverbanks in London Sunday to watch a boat carrying her and her family along the Thames amid a flotilla of 1,000 other ships. In some ways, the fuss over a monarch with an odd family and largely ceremonial duties helps explain the English writer George Orwell’s famous complaint about his country’s “obstinate clinging to everything that is out of date and a nuisance.”

This was a 'lead in' for an article in the Boston Globe, USA............does it agree with you?, Surprise you? or annoy you?

Nice selective editing.

Said article ends: "The monarchy doesn’t make much sense to American eyes — and maybe even some British ones — but it serves its purpose well."

Also, elsewhere in the Boston Globe...

"Military ships from a variety of different countries will be steaming to Boston for the week of July Fourth to salute the US Navy and commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Four majestic tall ships will glide in to the harbor to join them. Waterfront festivities will include a 45-minute aerial demonstration at noon on July Fourth by the Navy’s Blue Angels, which will coincide with the annual Fourth of July turnaround of the USS Constitution...."

And what a out the losses involved with the extra bank holiday? I recall this was more than 1.9 billion.

Exactly the point I was gonna make. Also civil servants got an extra privilege day off as well on top. I know several peopel who didn't get paid because they were forced to take the bank holiday off so many people lost a day's pay too.

And Prince Philip didnt even turn up yesterday FFS. If I'm forced to pay for this nonsense I expect a full set of royals for my money.

I'm glad is pissed down.

and they will be spending less and so on and so on. We'll be feeling the effects of this for years I reckon.

I sat on the throne for a full 10 minutes this morning. And what I produced is much more worthy of celebration than anything that old hag has done.

I just think that the cost of it all, at a time when the country is on it's knees, cannot be justified. We have been told time and time again about tightening our belts, we are all this together blah blah blah. Like bollocks are we. I am not anti royalist at all, but this was a huge circus that cost a bloody fortune.

But where does that money go, it doesn't just disappear into thin air - it is circulated into the economy through all the businesses who are involved in the celebrations.

2) Will I Am. Having shown himself up on The Voice: UK as someone who cannot sing (a talented artist I'm sure, but not a singer), it was doubly funny to hear him and Stevie Wonder wishing the Queen a happy birthday. What a moron. Although perhaps I should admire the fact that he wasn't paying attention to what the whole country was supposedly celebrating.

Technically it was the Queen's "official birthday" but I doubt they would have known that.

Whilst we're on the subject of shit performances can I add:
1) Paul McCartney - Lost the ability to sing and be a good performer many many years ago and should never have closed the show, Elton John was miles better.
2) Cliff Richard - Absolutely dreadful performance from him made worse by singing his happy clappy god song.
3) Cheryl Cole - Don't need to say any more.

You can't put a price on a nation's pride. Well done all involved. Marvellous weekend.

I did enjoy playing the Stone Roses Elizabeth, My Dear at full volume to our street party though.

Tear me apart and boil my bones
I'll not rest till she's lost her throne
My aim is true my message is clear
It's curtains for you, Elizabeth my dear

Elton John's first song was a shocking performance! I agree with everything else though.

I watched the Grayson Perry program last night, lots of people saying pride was stripped away with the decline of our manufacturing base.

Great program which is looking at taste across the classes.

I actually recorded that. I'll give it a watch later after I've finished taking down my bunting.

Couldn't agree with that quote more. The only good thing was a few days off work. Other than that couldn't wait for the f***ing circus to end.

Here, here.

Most Americans love the Royals and envy our fairy tale weddings etc..
Biggest load of bull considering they fought a war to break away from said Royals, and celebrate that fact every single year.

Exactly. I'm afraid royalists will believe anything they're told when it comes to propping up our unelected head of state. I find it very odd that people are so afraid of one man one vote. ???

It was a very good program. Next week it centres on middle-class taste which will amusing no doubt.
