To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, people packed the riverbanks in London Sunday to watch a boat carrying her and her family along the Thames amid a flotilla of 1,000 other ships. In some ways, the fuss over a monarch with an odd family and largely ceremonial duties helps explain the English writer George Orwell’s famous complaint about his country’s “obstinate clinging to everything that is out of date and a nuisance.”

This was a 'lead in' for an article in the Boston Globe, USA............does it agree with you?, Surprise you? or annoy you?

Spot on. America grew up 250 years ago, using English Liberalism as their example. Shame we couldn't follow our own lead.

Couldn't agree with that quote more. The only good thing was a few days off work. Other than that couldn't wait for the f***ing circus to end.

What do you expect from Boston?
Capital city of the Republic of Ireland.

Most Americans love the Royals and envy our fairy tale weddings etc..

I just think that the cost of it all, at a time when the country is on it's knees, cannot be justified. We have been told time and time again about tightening our belts, we are all this together blah blah blah. Like bollocks are we. I am not anti royalist at all, but this was a huge circus that cost a bloody fortune.

If that is true, then I apologise. But that wasn't how I heard it on the news. They just said that the cost was astronomical to the British tax payer. But like I said, if you are right Falkor, I stand corrected.

Yes it says likely yesterday the BBC did a break down of the cost and the only thing according to them the tax payer will foot is policing.

Il believe them over that rag anyway or any paper for that matter

£1.2bn according to the BBC, and knowing how fiercely lickspittlingly royalist they are, it probably cost a lot more.

But I'm not going to bang my republican drum (unless further provoked :lolol: ) so I'd just like to say two things:

1) Lenny Henry is yesterday's man. Will charity event and big occasion organisers everywhere please realise that being black and shouting loudly as a method to ask middle England to pay attention to him outlasted it's welcome 25 years ago and now it's pretty much everyone who thinks he is just another frightfully unfunny fat wanker. Rolf Harris on the other hand is a commonwealth treasure and one of the planet's most talented people, and the way he was cut short by this moron was nothing short of a disgrace. No more Lenny Henry please. Ever.
2) Will I Am. Having shown himself up on The Voice: UK as someone who cannot sing (a talented artist I'm sure, but not a singer), it was doubly funny to hear him and Stevie Wonder wishing the Queen a happy birthday. What a moron. Although perhaps I should admire the fact that he wasn't paying attention to what the whole country was supposedly celebrating.

The BBC (not exactly a bastion of republicanism) suggested it had cost the nation £1.2bn, although this is in large part down to having another bank holiday imposed on us.

And what a out the losses involved with the extra bank holiday? I recall this was more than 1.9 billion.
