I stayed in the Vdara which is just a short walk down a corridor from the Bellagio. It's a non smoking Hotel for a start, and doesn't have a casino so doesn't get a lot of through traffic.

I'll be staying there again when next in town.

I stayed at the Luxor, thought it was great, but then I have nothing to compare it to.

The plus side of the Pyramid scheme is that the entire ground floor is lined with check in desks around the edges. We were all booked in in a couple of minutes.

And you can have a fag.

When I was there they had an eight foot high one-armed bandit, all the staff dressed like pharoahs and slaves and a full-on boat trip round the ancient Egypt stylee basement floor of the hotel. Head-mental!

T'was a crazy place. Saddest sight was turning in around 2am and seeing some old lady on the slots. Went back down for breakfast at 8 and she was still there! Hadn't moved all night, just feeding the machines.
Great Golf Course up the road beyond Mandalay with white sand (which I became VERY acquainted with!).

Position on the strip is everything and you want to be as near to the middle as possible. I stayed at Treasure Island which was a mid price range option and I had no complaints. Essentially all the hotels are pretty amazing and the only two to avoid are Circus Circus and The Stratosphere which are showing their age and are the favoured cheap choice of companies booking people on multi centre tours.

Don't forget to tip and trust me you can have a great time without needing to gamble a cent! If you want a little flutter and free drinks to boot make sure you sit on the slots for a few minutes and the waitress will come to you.

In case this shows up in searches, any young groups going for 'party time' Cosmopolitan was pretty big, great pool, great day time vibes, big casino, great restaurants!

Stayed at the Bellagio - very central, good deal on rooms at the time, has the best show in town at its theatre ("O" - Cirque de Soleil), half a dozen excellent restaurants, excellent gambling, half a dozen pools - only downside was a tangle of suspiciously black pubic hair in the bathroom left in a neat pile on the washstand, and bizarrely overlooked by the maid, by the previous client who appeared to have been trimming his/her bush before departing!!

Love Vegas, but, in my opinion, where you stay is irrelevent it purely comes down to how much you want to spend or what deal you can get on a top hotel. There's so much going on all over the place. The best restaurant may be at the south end, the best club may be off the strip, the best show at the north end etc. Everyone just wanders into each hotel and uses its facilities anyway, you only want the room and if you have any sense you wont be spending much time in it anyway.
Just to throw a spanner in, nobody has mentioned old Vegas/Fremont Street/Golden Nugget etc I loved that part of Vegas and also I found that there was a lot of great places off the strip that were far cheaper.

Got to agree with the best bike ever, above.
We were on a very tight budget and stayed @ The Rivieria, top quality.

You 'ride the deuce' for $5 unlimited all day.
Basically a shuttle bus, going up and down the strip, so it really doesn't matter where you stay.

RC, is right re Old Vegas, a lot of money has been pumped back into it, and Old Central Station, is worth a visit, well it was for us:-

All you can eat buffet - Check
Casino - Check
Massive sports bar - Check
Micro brewery, real ale - Check
Vodka bar - Check.

There is no other way of saying this, we went for breakfast and left wankered.

Last time I was there I noticed that you now get a slip of paper with your winnings from the slot machines (no matter how small they are) which you then cash in. Gone are the days of the ‘ching ching ching’ of 50 dollars worth of quarters. Progress I guess – but it’s just not the same somehow.

Unless you go to 'slots of fun' opposite the Riviera

Agreed, the wall of noise as you enter a casino of the coins clanging out of the slots was all part of it.
If i may indulge, saw some great sights whilst there.
In a hotel buffet on mezzanine floor with escalators and stairs, saw a really obese women, in a wheelchair being pushed by her elderly husband towards the escalator 'this should be interesting' I thought, but as they neared she sprung out of the chair, went down and waited while her husband struggled down, she then jumped back in and off they went. Lazy cow.

Saw a street cleaner in Fremont Street on his hands and knees with what looked like a toothbrush, cleaning dirty marks off the pavement.

Best of all, Tom Jones at the MGM (some time ago) far better than I ever imagined it would be and Muhammed Ali in the audience, when Tom told him to stand up the place erupted.

We stopped at Ballys but it does'nt matter where you stop, you can go in any hotel to see the attractions...loved Vegas but don't restrict it to just that, went to the Grand Canyon,Part of Route 66,Death Valley...for golf fanatics they have the lowest golf course in the world...you drive round the salt flats then come across the course with grass like a snooker table. Saw Bonnie and Clydes machine gunned car at a casino...so much to see and do,love the place.

I think you're confusing it with your recollection of the Withdean hospitality portakabin after THAT sponsored match, Tom....

We stayed at the Cosmopolitan. Brand new opened in January. I can highly recommend it, 120 quid a night for a Bellagio fountain view suite and one if the few with an outside balcony. Right in the middle of the strip.
