My step-daughter's 15th birthday is fast approaching, and she has her heart set on a laptop. I know sweet f.a. about these things so thought I'd turn to the vast knowledge base that is NSC for tips.

Main usage is going to be farting about on bebo/msn etc I would suspect, but homework and GSCE coursework will also be done on it, so probably don't need anything too high spec. Budget around £300-£350

Letting teenage girls loose with laptops is a bad move. Have you seen what some of them get up to on MySpace. Just don't let her have a webcam, for her own safety.

Adrie - when you've USED a Mac, maybe recommend them then. All you've done so far is wank over them.

If you can push the budget a bit more, Toshiba's are indestructable, the Satellite line is one of the original consumer laptop lines and its still good now.

Don't buy Sony Vaio. You're just paying for the name.

They're damn good laptops though, but the customer support is useless.

Had a R600 from 2001 to 2006, it was a sub-notebook so fragile by design but with a replacement hard drive, it did 5 years.

I haven't had great experiences. My latest problem is the screen regularly freezeing in various colours yet the OS is still running. I have to force a restart to sort it out. For the spec, I don't think my machine was particularly great value for money.

I've got a Dell desktop and 2 Sony Vaio laptops. I wouldn't touch Dell with a barge pole again. The only problem I've had with the laptops is the paint peeling off the volume control buttons.

Strange, always found them very reliable but each to their own

Update your graphics drivers for that one. I used to get it when I was using the original drivers that came with it - club-vaio.com has the newest ones

And no, they're absolutely TERRIBLE value for money. Its the quality + name that makes them expensive.

Somewhat like Apple in that way. Oh, guess who designs Apples laptops? Sony.... Unfortunately they don't make them for them, so Apple have hardware quality "issues".

Ah cool, thanks. That might explain that thing that has been constantly popping up for the past 9 months telling me to download an update
