The one at Grimsby away was the most surreal. People just sort of ambled on and ended up shaking hands with the locals.

Never heard of that word before. Turns out it's an Americanism :facepalm:

Why is it preferable to platform, stage, podium or rostrum?

Its certainly not an Americanism, its from the Anglo-French deis, Old French dais, dois "platform, high table," from Latin discus "disk-shaped object," also, in Medieval Latin, "table," from Greek diskos "quoit, disk, dish"
