Martinez is still favourite, but Gus has moved into 9/2 2nd favourite for the Villa job on Paddy Power.

Stranger things have happened , we were all expecting Gannon to be the new Albion boss. He turned us down and we ended up with the number 3 on the shortlist.

So Gus could leave to go to club in crisis with no cash to spend, over demanding fans, a fading squad and be in the lime light constantly great for his career IF he succeeds but a disaster if he fails the press will be all over it; or stay here where his kudos will only improve why do people think he will leave? He will only go to another job to improve his career and as others have already turned Villa down it sounds like a troubled ship doomed to fail.

Depends how you define success though. Villa have been run into the ground by previous managers, but that also means that - unlike, say, WBA - it will be difficult to do any worse than the last one. Even mid-table for a season counts as progress, and with the players they have, that really shouldn't be too difficult. It also offers the certainty of managing in the Premier League, whereas we, for all our potential, are still in the Championship and odds-against to be promoted next season. I'm sure we'll get there at some point, but just a bit of bad luck here and there could mean that it is four or five years yet before we get our chance back in the big time. Lambert is there already, and doing very nicely.

For me, that makes Villa the standout job of the ones on offer at the moment - arguably even more attractive than Liverpool - and a decent contract will also mean that even if it goes wrong, the payoff will leave him set up for life. If Gus gets the call - ie. Villa are prepared to take on a fairly volatile character who will cost them plenty - I suspect Lerner will have him at hello.

It seems that Martinez, having been given a 7 day ultimatum by his chairman to sort himself out, has flown to Miami. Everyone thought it was re: the Liverpool job but it seems it was the Villa post and he has flown to talk to Randy Lerner.

I have to say it seems that his chairman is almost telling him to go - silly man

I hear what your saying and after another good season I would be worried but I just think its a bit early, dont underestimate the job at Villa the squad is threadbare full of youth and the fans become more disillusioned and depressed by the week they will be straight on the back of an unproven manager if they don't have a decent start. Add to it the fact Lerner will be cautious of unproven managers after the last debacle, I honestly believe they will end up with Capello

All the press seem to suggest he is in Miami for Liverpool talks, may I ask Severside what source of info makes you think Martinez is their for Villa talks?? cheers

In fairness it was Ian Abraham (Moose) from Talksport so possibly not entirely reliable as media sources go

Dave Wheelan is a very very good chairman for that football club, he appreciates just how good a manager Martinez is for that club, and has admitted that sooner or later he will lose him to a bigger and better club. I think he just wants a decision soon to prevent all this running over the summer, with Martinez spending the transfer budget then sodding off to Villa in August, leaving a squad not signed by the new manager (a very smart move IMO). Wheelan isn't stupid, and has spent within their means far more than others have done.

Martinez doesn't seem too popular with the Liverpool fans though.

I've noticed that: can't think why. He's a good manager who's done well with both his clubs. He's managed to keep Wigan in the PL, which is some achievement in itself, but has done it by playing attractive football.

I know that Liverpool fans want Benitez back but he just seemed to spunk loads of money on mediocre players with no plans for the future. They've just sacked a manager who did that, why employ another one.

Because they are THE mighty LFC, and he is not a big enough 'name'.

Doesn't anyone else get sick beyond belief of LFC fans thinking they're still the club they were 25 years ago?

There's this element of a divine right to win things. LFC have been a cup side for at least ten years and have won one cup since 2005. Their fans need a) a reality check and b) to be more open minded about new young and up and coming managers.

They remind me a bit of Leeds United actually!

Why not?

Martinez is exactly the sort of sharp, young manager that clubs should be looking for. I can sort of understand why Liverpool fans don't want him (as HKFC points out, they're extremely deluded and still think of themselves as one of Europe's big clubs) but for the life of me, I can't work out why Villa wouldn't want him. Good manager, plays attractive football should be top of the Villa shopping list. I expect that Martinez thinks he's too good for Villa and wouldn't take the job anyway but all Villa fans should be hoping he'd take it.

If not Martinez, who on earth would you want at Villa? Another manager who's been around the block a few times? Mick McCarthy's available

There's photos of Martinez and the Liverpool chairman out in Miami so f*** all chance theyre getting Rafa. I actually think Martinez could be a really bad appointment for a club like Liverpool it reeks of the Hodgson appointment.

In a Nice Man is unable to take pressure from vitriolic and deluded Liverpool fans.
