Ahhh!
Not a U-turn then.

Ms Reeves reiterated that she would not raise VAT, national insurance or income tax, as promised in Labour's manifesto, but she did not rule out increasing inheritance tax, capital gains tax, or reforming tax relief on pensions.

Labour said repeatedly during the election campaign there would be no tax rises on "working people", so working people don't pay IHT or CGT ?

Something like less than 1% of adults who an income taxed are liable for CGT. So that is pretty much a resounding no.

In terms of IHT, less than 5% of estates end up needing to pay IHT.

Something like ?. LSE states it's less than 3% of taxpayers over a 10 year period. Government stats say 370k people paid it in 2021/22 so it's not exactly no one is it ?

Putting political allegiences aside, you do have to have a degree of sympathy for Starmer and co.

Since victory on 5th July its been a shit storm, the Tories emptied the treasury, the riot in Leeds, Manchester Airport, Tommy Robinson's Martin Luther Kingesque civil rights march, Southport tradegy, subsequent race riot, all kinds of stuff going on in Southend, they must be wondering what the next 4 years and 11 months is going to bring?

I’m just glad we’ve got competent people in charge now rather than the clowns from the last five years or so in particular.
As an aside comparing that right wing **** with Martin Luther King in any way is a bit of a stretch imo

Is the Rachel Reeves who said she wouldn't raise taxes but who's now raising taxes the same Rachel Reeves who published a book in October 2023 (The Women Who Made Modern Economics) that featured over twenty passages simply lifted from other sources, including Wikipedia  without reference or acknowledgment?

Perhaps she should have called her book The Woman Who Made a Shed Load of Royalties By Nicking Other Peoples' Work

Among many, many examples, here are just two that showcase Reeves' outstanding authorship and integrity....

The Guardian obituary for the late philosopher, Elizabeth Anscombe (published 2001) reads...
“Once, entering a smart restaurant in Boston, she was told that ladies were not admitted in trousers. She simply took them off.”

Reeves’ book reads...
"Once, when entering a smart restaurant in Boston, she was told that ladies were not admitted in trousers, so she took them off there and then!”

Wikipedia entry for Beatrice Webb reads...
“For her part, Beatrice voiced disapproval of Wells’ ‘sordid intrigue’ with the daughter of a veteran Fabian Sydney Olivier. He responded by lampooning the couple in his 1911 novel The New Machiavelli as Altiora and Oscar Bailey, a pair of short-sighted, bourgeois manipulators.”

Reeves’ book reads...
“For her part, Beatrice voiced disapproval of Wells’s ‘sordid intrigue’ with the daughter of a veteran Fabian member. He responded by lampooning the couple in his 1911 novel The New Machiavelli as Altiora and Oscar Bailey, a pair of short-sighted, bourgeois manipulators.”

Zero integrity. Zero trust.

More violence I'd expect?

With power comes great responsibility, i would suggest though they’d take all of that ahead of a world pandemic no?

Starting to wonder if I made a mistake voting for them on July 5th as the country does appear to be going to the dogs ever since , at least to the casual observer anyway .
Still we will soon be saving on our weekly shopping , energy and motoring costs and at the end of the day folks it's the pound in your pocket that
really puts a smile on your face .
