Say what you like about Diane Abbott, and plenty are:

1987 48.7% of the vote and a majority of 7,678.
1992: 57.8% and an increased majority of 10,727
1997: 65.2% and an increased majority of 15,627
2001: 61% and a decreased majority of 13,651
2005: 48.6% and a decreased majority of 7,427
2010: 55% and an increased majority of 14,461
2015: 62.9% and an increased majority of 24,008
2017: 75.1% and an increased majority of 35,139
2019: 70.3% and a decreased majority of 33,188

She's a brutally effective vote winner in her constituency

For those saying she cocked up - The Sunday Time and Times reported that she was barred from running. Starmer briefing different messaging?

All she said was the following

Starmer sat on this for ages and has been forced into a decision. He's such a lowlife liar. His only motivation is to get to the top regardless of who he steps on.

Some of those piling in should read the Forde report.

There's a difference between not saying they will raise taxes and specifically ruling it out. I'm slightly annoyed they did the latter. But I'm more annoyed at the double standards of the press that demand they do exactly that. When the Tories produce a manifesto, it's rarely worth the paper it's written on as they hardly ever bother to produce any costed material. On the other hand, Labour produced a costed manifesto in 2019 and the media spent their time picking holes in it, rather than demanding the Conservatives produce anything whatsoever.
If you make a big deal about the need to raise income taxes for the wealthiest, over several years, and actually make it a major plank in your own party leadership election manifesto, but then just before a general election state that you won’t raise such taxes, you can expect to be grilled on it. I’ve not been following this closely but I’m guessing that Labour still intend to raise corporation tax, capital gains tax and taxes on dividends. So this will probably help Sir Keir deflect attention. Arguably the very wealthiest earn more from these revenue sources than straight income. Any decent accountant will ensure that’s the case.

Terrible fact checking from the BBC who seem to be more and more of a Tory mouthpiece under the BeeGee.

Yep. Increasingly looking like Abbott has made another of her regular cock-ups. I have no sympathy.
The proof of the pudding, and all that. It was a mealy mouthed passive-tense response from Sir Keir. Very lawyerly. He could have pulled the rug from the annoying interviewers and simply said “Of course she’ll be able to stand.” She has a lot of local support so it will be interesting to see if the local CP is allowed to make its own selection or not. I suspect this little irritation has a few more twists and turns.

They are hardly going to state this during an election campaign. Tax cuts/rises are the one thing that really motivates people to vote for and against a party.

I agree they will have to raise revenue somehow, so this will probably happen at some point though.
Maybe they will get the economy going which with the increased taxation this wilkl bring in will be no need for tax rises.

Why is that a disgraceful post? Isn't he just highlighting the probably reason why she was victimised?
Abbott has a long record of consistently making faux pas for decades now. To blanket slander those who criticise her consistent embarrassments as racists is in extremely bad taste. It is possible to be both incompetent and an ethnic minority. Criticism is not off the table if you’re an ethnic minority. People shouldn’t be afraid to challenge views for fear of being labelled racist, an anti-semite or islamaphobe.

It is these kinds of hyperbolic generalisations which make me lose any and all respect for those to espouse them. It is the politics of hate, fear and division which are the very criticisms rightly levelled against the political right.

Shameful comment and the poster should apologise.

Indeed. I am confident Starmer does not want her to stand and was expecting her to agree to stand down. She has no apparently chosen to have not understood that to be the case.

She had done nothing but snipe at Starmer since he became leader and has never endorsed anything he has said.

So as far as I am concerned I don't care whether she goes quietly or kicking and screaming. If somehow the party decide she has done her penance for her racism, and may stand again for Labour, that's up to the party. If so I'm not sure Abbott will show any contrition. And frankly I am surprised she hasn't already defected to join her former squeeze in is quest to grasp Power for The People.

It seem that Abbott wants to do maximum damage to Starmer-Labour. Good luck with that, ma'am

(and also the right will criticize Starmer for being mean to Abbott if she is booted out, and will call him weak and scared of the hard left if he doesn't boot her out, so . . . . .)

I am curious to see what they do when they have difficult decisions to make, although there is a lot of low hanging fruit that can be picked before it gets to that. Improving trade relations with the EU, and taxing private education are two excellent, sensible policies but stuff like that won't fix everything.

It annoys me that they are ruling out tax rises for a start, when it is quite clear something has to be done to pay for the Tory mess where nothing in the public sector works.
(1) Improving trade relations with the EU - hopefully once elected he'll start talking about re-joining SM / CU

(2) Private education - agree about taxation - but don't demonise it - IMO what people spend their money on (like private Healthcare) is up to them.

(3) Agree - taxation (for the very well off) has to rise - this applies to Companies too of course and closing loopholes (for both Cos. & Individuals)

Getting value for money is equally important - half the Councils in England should be binned and merged - why do we have Adur & Worthing Council AND WSCC? Why Horsham District Council AND WSCC? So much duplication and waste. Remember lots of villages have another level - Parish Councils - what a waste of time and money - Bin them.

This wastage and bloating goes for the NHS too - world's 6th largest employer - where does the money go? (BTW my wife works for the NHS and so sees the wastage first hand)

The Labour Party will win a massive landslide, but it will take two terms to get anywhere near sorting the Country out.

You are correct of course but this implies they are lying (which they undoubtedly are in this instance) which therefore means labour is starting where the Tories have left off. I really think most people would vote labour despite promising to raise taxes (or even because of). God politics is depressing at the moment. 😡

Disgraceful post
Why? Perhaps you have misunderstood the post? He is criticizing the likely racist element in the sniping at Abbott.

I am very much not a fan of the way she 'does' politics but it is certainly the case there is a racist undercurrent to some of the tropes.

I'm not sure any party has ever been elected on a platform of a plan to raise taxes.
