[Politics] Labour manifesto 2024

Worthy of its own thread, hopefully an insight into policy, tax-spend and legislation over the next 5 years. Hoping for meat on the bone, rather than vague soundbites. So far:

No increases in VAT, income tax or NI. Suggests to me, increases in IHT and capital gains tax.

Home planning blocking by councils/nimbies to be unlocked. A must imho, but hopefully not destroying woodland and other key environments.
I
Home blocking isn’t nimbyism, its caring for their community and environment. It should be up north not in the cramped south east and should be based on environmental factors only.

Near Where my mum lives in Devon there are people who moved into new build homes on the edge of town about 5 years ago going absolutely mad that permission has been granted to build more homes just a little further from town. So the people who moved into contested homes 5 years ago have no become the moaners. This is nimby as it gets.

The Vine show on R2 had some Labour MP on proudly saying about cancelling the Arundel bypass. What a cock. That road has needed improving since the 70's. Along with the death road that is the A21 because we're down south nothing is done. The biggest problem Labour have is they forget there's a South further down than f***ing London.

Can't see me voting for anyone this time.

It's a quite superb manifesto, probably in my top 3 Labour manifesto's of the 21st century.

I am expecting the beige PM to be about as good and effective as the grey one but he does a deserve a crack at it.

Anyone know what his father’s profession was?

I think some forget that almost all houses, even in cities, were built on what was once a field.
The Nimbyism in our part of West Sussex is something to behold.

Only when you do something stupid like announcing unfunded tax cuts ala Truss. I think most people (and the city) would deem re-joining the customs union as eminently sensible.
I would be intrigued to know what would happen if they said this was the plan. They obviously won’t because it is risky but people wonder about where growth would come from. Removing barriers to trade with near neighbours might be a decent start. But imagine Farage and the Tories if they said this!

So in about 10 posts on the same thread we've had the manifesto described as cautious but also unachievable

There's politics wrapped up for you.
I was about to post exactly the same thing.

The difference seems to be who you get your news from. Unless the posters have actually read the document

I generally don’t understand the point of manifestos anymore. Haven’t the conservatives only fully met 1 out of 30 odd from the last election? I looked it up but could not find the exact number although one article stated 13 they definitely have not met.

They kept saying when they were flipping leaders like burgess in McDonald’s you vote for the party not the leader so we don’t get a new election when there’s a new leader but then each of them wanted to chuck out everything from the previous one and ignore the last election’s promises!

To me, as a strong labour supporter my biggest concern is SKS and RR appear to be betting on growing the economy to meet their spending commitments and cannot come up with a reasonable answer if those growth rates don’t appear. I’d love them to say, well we can just get an instant 3% if we rejoin the common market, maybe that’s what they have in their back pocket?

No point asking the tories, they’ll just lie anyway, after all they have form!

I agree with the environmental (green-belt) concerns about massive house-building projects, and think that developing brown-field sites and converting derelict buildings should be the prime targets.

But not much point building the majority of new homes in the north if the majority of jobs (and people) are based in the south-east - unless you can persuade some of those companies to relocate from London to the north?

Imho if they’d announced that plan a couple of months back for example, they’d still achieve a vast majority.

There can’t be many marginal voters left who’d want the cutting off our noses economic strategy to continue.

Are Labour intending to bring back cash only then? Maybe looks like it with the new banknotes of King Charles on just released......

Very cautious according to most pundits. Seems to be Labour's strategy. When the tories are self-immolating there's no need to start pouring petrol over yourself as well. Looks like regardless of what people think it will get them into power. The real test will begin from there.
This sums it up ...

I don't get why they are making so many blatantly unachievable promises (eg Just got back from the dentist who told me the 'rescue plan for dentistry' is absolutely impossible to achieve and is 'total fantasy'). They don't need to do this and are setting themselves up for a massive fall come the next GE. Before this election campaign I envisaged at least two terms for Labour, but now (if the opposition parties get their act together) I very much doubt it.
... whereas this (wilfully?) misreads the situation. You've been banging on about how Labour hasn't divulged their policies -- which they have, and why there's nothing in here that's new, which is what ALL the political commentators are saying -- and now that they've released their manifesto -- containing just their previously divulged policies -- you're of the view that it's stuffed full of "so many blatantly unachievable promises".

I think @Weststander has got the key info in the OP, and agree with you that their bet on growth -- which is the central plank of their strategy -- might just be their undoing. The alternative to that is they will ditch the deficit commitments, which will probably come mid-way through the parliament. But in terms of growth, think you're right, it's the planning reform that they think will be key to it. And this also illustrates that @Is it PotG? has been right to identify changes to planning law as a line of attack on Labour but, given said poster hasn't identified anything to oppose the Tories or Farage's lot, his claim that 'they're all the same' is somewhat disingenuous.

Back to the avoidance of trite soundbites by Starmer, an opposition spokesman has described Labour's plans as a:
Tax
Trap
Manifesto

All I have to say to that is: Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

Disingenuous? To say that Labour's plans are really bad, and also that all the parties are the same (so please don't bother to vote; and let me sneak down to the polling station when you aren't looking, and put a sly X by the name of the Tory candidate)? Gaslighting? Bullshit? Sneakiness?

Surely not ???
