Kuipers - am I being harsh?

But you're not taking into consideration the fact that that ball was both dipping AND swerving quite noticeably. Had a Premiership player done that, it would be in the running for goal of the season. His position was fine, but he still had no chance of stopping it. I'll say it again: If Jake Robinson had scored that goal we would be labelling it our goal of the season, people would be comparing it to the best goals they've ever seen, and there wouldn't even be a word against the other keeper.

I'm merely debating whether he should have done better and until I see it I will continue to think he could have done.

The irony being that when we did finally push someone forward - they scored from it from a place where Jake would have been.
And that was because the crowd urged him forward.

Far worse was the free kicks. WTF? Why do we spurn chances for an unopposed shot at the goal with pointless overelaboration? Fraser, who I thought had an absolute stinker last night, messed the first two up. When we get a third, finally we take a shot and it leads to El Abd's goal. Hopefully that won't have gone unnoticed by the management.
Don’t get me started on that. Each time I was just stood in the crowd saying “Get away Fraser, get away Fraser” over and over as it was begging to be hit by either Richards or Westlake.

Agreed. I don't think many keepers at a higher level would've stopped it either. Kuipers was only a couple of yards off his line and still got nowhere near it.
I thought he was about 1-2 yards outside his six yard box? ???

People are saying he didn't get near it and from where I was sitting he didn't seem to get off the ground. As I say, at first look, I think he could have done better. I understand your point that if it was the other way round I probably wouldn't care about the standard of the opposition's keeper but I'm entitled to have my opinion on ours at this point.

Personally I thought Kuips didnt have the best of games last night. Yes Ok the first goal was dipping etc etc, but it came from a long way out and he did have time.....the second goal was more worrying as the ball appeared to go straight through his hands.

Having said all that, you are only as good as the defence in front of you and certainly at times our defence do not give Kuips a chance.

Overall I actually though our defence didnt do too bad as the two black lads up front for the gills were very good on the break.

I wonder why Cullip was substituted......he seemed to be doing ok?

Too far from the sun
Which is why I'm questioning him.
It's quite normal for most keepers to be a few yards off their line when the attacking players are 30 yards or more from goal, the player in possession has his back to goal and there's no-one in the penalty area. Although the guy shot, it would have been far more expected for him to lay the ball off, or at best put a through ball in for a forward. Kuipers was positioned to deal with those. Fact is the guy turned quickly and unleashed an unbelievable strike, which he may well never do again if he plays for another 20 years.

I can see your thinking but I think when you see it again you'll see you are being harsh. From my vantage point in C Block the ball was travelling very fast and dipped very late, though I couldn't tell if it was swerving side-to-side. Out of interest, where were you sitting?

G block. Thanks for your input, you and Badger and both probably right. Maybe i was over reacting because it put us one nil down and I thought we were going to get turned over at the time.

From my vantage point, behind the radio, I would say the first goal was down to a mistake made by Mayo.

Any chance we can get the goal on youtube so the foriegn legion can decide too?

My son and I were down the front of B block last night and like CTS we thought that Kuipers didn't really to get off the ground for the first goal. The attempted pass from Fraser that gave their guy the ball was pretty naive as well and then nobody seemed to close him down (again).
View of their second goal was awful but looked like a complete cock-up by Michel.
Like you I thought our defence was OK(ish) but the Gills front two (like Orient's) were a bit of a handful, certainly until the first sending off. On another night we could have shipped a few and lost; hopefully the defence will be tighter on Saturday and at Walsall - it will probably need to be.

For what its worth Chappers, I tend to agree with you. I was right behind the goal and I think the Kuipers of yesteryear might have turned that first shot over the bar, although I think that would have got past most division 3 keepers and Croft did hit it superbly.

John Byrne made a comment on the radio, that for the 1st goal and the free kick that hit the bar, the keeper should be stopping shots which are central on the goal.. I don't think he thought Michel had a good game.

Directly in line with the flight of the ball (south stand) as it dipped over Kuipers. He wasn;t far of his line - and was in a position that all keepers take up when the play is 40 yards out.

It dipped very late and was a truly memorable (somewhat lucky??) strike. can't blame the keeper - move on.

Side note - good to see the crowd not getting on the Albions back at that point - as they have done this season.

Second goal............no so easy to explain.

Kuipers had absolutely no chance with the goal, having seen the replays, I am convinced even Cech or Buffon wouldn't have saved it.

the fact he described the second goal as being a "monty python" would suggest that he thought kuipers made a complete cock up of it

With the free kick that hit the bar - that was going for the top corner, not the centre of goal.

In fairness to Budgie, he's probably in the worst position to be able to tell.

I thought it was an unbelievable strike for their first goal. One of those that usually ends up in Row Z. Kuipers didn't react because he didn't have time to - superb goal.

Their second was a ridiculous flap - a hideous error. Good job we were 4-1 up at the time!
