Kraftwerk was my first ever gig. 14 years old, 1981, the Dome. Marvellous scenes!!

Genius is the only way to describe Kraftwerk.

Way way ahead of their time (Autobahn came out in '74 FFS) and influencial in so many ways.

As others have mentioned above, I'd say the main point about Kraftwerk isn't even whether you actually like to listen to their stuff, although I do. I think it's so important to bear in mind the context of what music sounded like when they first started and just how ludicrously futuristic and innovative their stuff was at the time.

Try playing some Kraftwerk to someone who's never heard it before and then get them to guess which year it's from; I'll wager they'll be miles out. And early rappers and rap producers like Afrika Bambaataa are also keen to pay them their dues and respect. For better or worse, four geeky blokes from Dusseldorf - almost accidentally - invented modern music.

All of this Kraftwerk talk has driven me to be playing them and I've now gone on to Neu. I'd forgotten what a hot band they were.

Germany in the early 70s produced Kraftwerk, Neu and Can, three bands that have been massively influence on modern music - in fact, nearly all electronic music/techno comes from that source. What was in the water there?
