I am due one (after 3 lots of surgery over 35 years). Good luck!

(And may I be the first to say that before I opened the thread I assumed it was another one about taking the knee )

If you get it done at goring hall hospital, see if you can get Mr. Shah .......not Mr Lewis.
From someone that works there

What are you basing that on personality or outcomes?

The NJR highlights he is very good, and his infection rates are among the best nationally.

If I might extend this discussion downwards, my wife, after 40 plus years of dance training and teaching and a botched bunion op when she was 16, is having major problems with her feet, one in particular. She has seen Mr Palmer at Woodingdean and also Goring Hall and he wants to operate although with a modest chance of improving things. Does anyone have any relevant experience with foot specialists or this one in particular?

Can't advise, but recently saw this on the FB Walking Football group:

I'd be surprised if i was playing squash afterwards . Given I've never played in my life . But I'd hope to be able to trudge up windswept Northern fells again .

You could start by doing a few rounds up Southover Street. I'll stand at the top and count you as I'm just near the Pot.

Maybe surgery could be avoided.
We do some pretty cool stuff with bond marrow, stem cells and PRP treatment.

I looked into this when I had mine done but the insurance wouldn't pay for it as it was not yet proven enough

I had mine done at Goring Hall by Ruy da Assunção and been very happy with how that has worked out.

Majid Chowdray is the chap doing it . NHS , but at the Montefiore in Hove.

Mr Chowdray is an excellent surgeon and a good egg to boot. His outcomes are fantastic.

The new Mako robot at the Monty is generating a lot of attention and that's exactly the intention. Outcomes from robotic joint replacement surgery are no better or worse than from traditional joint replacement surgery. The robot does not increase efficiency, safety, quality, and does not reduce costs. What it does do is increase revenue because people will pay a lot of money to be operated on by a robot. Any surgeon will tell you the same.

You're in good hands, do what others on here have said and make sure you get as fit as possible pre op.

All the best with your new knees!

Exactly - just make sure your surgeon can revert to open access if the robot packs up.

I had both knees replaced privately at the Chichester Nuffield ,sixteenen years ago.
The ops were done within about two months of each other,April and June.
Excellent results and are still ok after all this time.It is absolutely crucial that you do your post op exercises assiduously to get the best results.
Good luck :smile::smile::thumbsup:

Knees are decent, the surgeon is in the pay of the Manufacturer, Stryker and is encouraged to use the Mako to garner more attention. The outcomes are no better with the robot although arguably the balancing is more accurate - You're in good hands and I would focus your efforts on getting as fit as you possibly can pre op

I recently had both hips done there with this treatment. Had to pay myself as Axa refused. Defnitely improved things without having to have fairly major surgery, and am impressed so far. Just like surgery, though, the post procedure physio is crucial.

There are better surgeons out there. National Joint Registry is a somewhat blunt tool and only ever as good as the data inputted by surgeons with a vested interest.

I was considering Mr Lewis for hip replacements when I was thinking of gong that route. Who is best for those in Sussex if able to use private healthcare?

Not really, because those not imputing data perhaps have something to hide?

Re better surgeons, depends what you’re basing your judgement on.

There are a few - in Sussex I would personally suggest Hugh Apthorp. But there are also the likes of Phil Stott, Madhu Rao, Drabu.

If you're prepared to travel I would ALWAYS go to Kerry Acton at Guildford. Low infections and great outcomes. Small scar to boot.

Compliance can be variable and depends how revisions are reported - some centres revise some plate for example, so not every intervention is reported in the in the same way.

Re Judgement - that's fair, my view is based on experience of working in the industry for some decades. He's not terrible but there are better out there

No, but I’m sure you’d agree, from a transparency perspective, it is better to know the results of the person operating on you.

Re Lewis, your view is interesting, as I have consultant colleagues who rate him very highly, and that influenced my own knee replacement.

As you say it does boil down to opinion but also individual patient confidence. [emoji2]
