Read 'The Aquariums of Pyongyang' or 'Escape From Camp 14' if you're in any doubt that North Korea is in fact a complete bag of shite,

It's pretty certain that he had his uncle executed, but I doubt the method. Almost certainly just shot.

I'm calling the propaganda card on this one - they're making him out to be a Dr Evil style super villain, which he may well be, but some of the stories are very imaginative and absurd because they can get away with it.

This. Bullshit propoganda. That's all.

Communism for ya ..... anyone remember East Germany? .... conveniently not mentioned by the left ...ever!

If you think North Korea operates under a form of communism, read some books on the country.

It's something far different, bizarre and evil.

The modern super powers are frightened to touch it, through fear of pissing the other off.

Yes, read some books about Russia under Stalin and Beria and China under Mao, I think that will give you a steer on Communism.....

I have and I'm not defending communism. Unlike most on here I visited a communist country in the 80s and saw with own eyes after having to register with the local police station etc..

I just think suggesting North Korea is bad because it's communist is a thoroughly simplistic argument. The people exist under a personality cult, most completely unaware of what the outside world is actually like.

Calling it communist or even fascist is irrelevant.

The family and their cronies control the country like the Mafia. I'd suggest they are quite aware of the madness but haven't got an exit strategy.

The only way to stay on top is to be the meanest sonofabitch possible. By popping off his uncle he has clearly stated he is a man to beware of, the people and the apparatchiks now know that.

There are going to be several levels of control in NK.

Kim and his family at the top, it needs a major revolution to get to them.

The inner circle of government who could either get offed by Kim or by their "comrades" in order to gain favour.

The lower levels of The Party who could get purged by Kim/government or get it from the people if there ever was revolution.

The Military, who could get purged at the top level, but lower ranks might be supported by the people if they revolted against Kim.

One day it will all blow up and there will be trouble, don't expect a South African style Truth and Reconciliation committee.

I've read a few books on the country. The authors have difficulty predicting that a revolution could happen because the society is so closed. Remarkably so. Obviously because of the totalitarian government but also also because of the culture. Apart from the border areas since travel is so tightly controlled most people have no idea what the outside world is like.

The few accounts I've read of those who have managed to escape all describe their complete shock even when crossing the border to China.

Even in places like East Germany they had a sense of what was happening over the border by picking up foreign TV signals.

I've just read a book on it. The East Germans knowing they couldn't stop it had a Harry Hiil TV Burp programme made taking the piss out of the counter revolutionary decadent West.

The journalist tracked down the presenter. He was still the same, framed pictures of Marx around the house etc.. longing for the old days.

Around the time of the execution wasn't it reported that there was a poor harvest and a lot of starvation occuring in NK?

The fear of revolution or just being replaced could have been a factor in this decision, the uncle was tipped to get the top job before Jong-Un came to power so it could be that he was seen as a rival and a threat and by executing him it sent out a powerful message and removed a figure head that a campaign to oust him could have used, especially if he wanted to open up NK to outside influences?

By keeping the population in the dark about the outside world and through propoganda of blaming the US and SK for their peoples woes, it's helping to keep the current leader in power and prevent revolution they probably must fear.

East Germans (like Angela Merkel) knew all about state surveillance and the threat to personal liberty that the Stasi represented. That's why the current German people are so shocked to discover that the US government have been hacking into Mrs Merkel's phone.

Meanwhile ... we in the UK are fed the story that spying on our own citizens is OK, "because it's all part of the war against terrorism".

Yep ... maybe we should pay a little bit more attention to what "foreign TV" is making of our state's activities.

His supposed crimes against the regime included having ‘improper relations with several women’ and having ‘wined and dined at back parlours of deluxe restaurants’.

In addition, Jang was said to have ‘squandered foreign currency at casinos while he was receiving medical treatment in a foreign country under the care of the party’.

Worst of all perhaps, in the twisted logic of this supposed workers’ paradise, was that Jang was guilty of ‘such factional acts as dreaming different dreams’.

So Belinda Carlisle would be ok over there then...
