Kids Toys Then and Now.....Whats better?

With Arthurs Birthday coming up I've started to do a bit of window shopping...First place of course ebay - I've somehow or other navigated into the vintage toys section....most are for much older kids but bloody nora - I reckon old fashioned toys were much better!! What do you think?

Wow a mangle....

The last time I saw one of those was at our outdoor swimming pool in Worthing (the Lido) when my best mate fat Billy pretended to put his willy in it and we all got thrown out.

After that we used to go fishing and throw live eels into the pool. They never lasted long in there but it used to frighten all the old women.

Whats all this got to do with old toys...................... absolutely nothing.

we have a toy mangle, it's blue. the mother in law gave it to fran when she was little. not sure why it's still hanging around.

i don't know how old arthur is but fuzzy felts are the favourite around here. the real proper old fashion ones not the gimmicky disney princess ones. oh and those tin toys that you wind up in the side with those huge keys. the kids love those for some reason.

My young son was running around on holiday with a toy gun given to him by a newly aquired friend. One of the mothers of another child said to me , '' Do you think that is appropriate in the current climate''

For once I was lost for words.

I thought maybe if he had strapped pretend explosives around his body.. ok.. but a small toy gun.


When I was a nipper I had a gun called a Johnny 7, which as the older posters on here will verify had 4 ways you could kill or maim someone. That was a proper toy for an 8 year old.

Most toys nowadays just involve pressing buttons and staring at screens. Might as well be at WORK.

that's the ones. we have that circus one. the spaceship/solar system one is my personal favourite though.

Toys today don't involve any imagination at all. Most of them don't even involve going outside. Kids in our day had far more fun and those fuzzy felts are great. My kids also got great fun out of sticklebricks. The amount of things that their little minds turned them into was just amazing and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Sticklebricks - I remember the name, were the the blocks with lots of little pegs on them that could mesh together?

I also had massive amounts of lego, but Arthur might be a bit young for that? Proper lego, as in the sets made police/fire stations, harbour, airport etc not harry potter and starwars replicas!

Plastercine and Meccano, bloody brilliant. Spirograph. Scalextric. Buckeroo. Silly Putty. Rosy cheeks and scrapes on knees, ruffled hair, freckles, scrumping, cheeky grins, bathtime with siblings, sleeping squashed together head-to-toe....

...Ive gone too far now havnt I.

Arthur inherited about 250 Dinky toys from his grandfather. They are mostly military and all in playworn condition without boxes, but worth a bit...He loves them and we're in two minds as to letting him play with them...
