Have been told by the quacks that I may have them, all symptons suggest it. Have had urine test and blood test this morning and then maybe ultra sound.

No idea about this apart from I have been told its the equivalent of a women given birth in terms of pain.
I have been told to drink lots of fluid to make me go wee more, but how long is this process gonna take before i pass them.

Can I drink alcohol?

Assuming you're not taking pain killers for it, yes. But water, just plain old water is best; and lots of it too.

As for length of time. I honestly couldn't tell you. When I had them, the barsteward got stuck and it took a year from first pains to operation to remove it (Exceptional circumstances, My GP was incompetent and couldn't diagnose in three trips over 6 months).

Does anyone know what causes them?

I'd like to avoid this, pebbles are for Brighton beach - not for appearing out of my nob!

Build up of excess urea in the kidney with not enough fluid to dissolve it. Its a dietary thing. Too much salt, sugar and the like in the blood. Kidneys filter it out and it coalesces into a solid (and very spikey) stone which will then pass through to the bladder and out through your knob. Bloody hurts too.

Thats from memory, more information here: Kidney stone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

totally - type into google "natural pain killers" and you will find lots of foods. the pharma crew want your money, not your health.

cheers, I think thats my problem as I am really bad at drinking water, I reckon no more that a few glasses a week at best, drink it in coffee etc, but that dont really count!!

Now I have a litre bottle with me all the time and just keep filling it up, going to wee more often now which I am told is a good thing

My eldest son had a kidney stone whilst in Japan last year, luckily all treatment was covered by insurance.
As others have said, just drink loads of water and hope to pass it.Have you had a scan to ascertain the position and size of the stone? His passed in about 4 weeks and he said the passing wasn't as bad as the pain before. If the stone is too big to pass you can have it 'zapped' and broken into little bits.
The doctors in Japan said when you pass the stone, keep it and bring it in for analysis and we will tell you what may have caused it.In my son's case, nothing in particular showed up so it was just one of those things.
Don't know about the treatment in this country, but the Japanese doctors and hospitals were shit hot and very efficient....loads of scans, blood tests etc.
Good luck, don't give up on the water, keep taking the pain killers and I hope it passes soon!

Good luck with that, going by the experience of a family member, you're in for a bloody painful time if you don't take steps to stop them now...

thats sounds like it to be honest, I get them at lunchtime.

When you're doubled up in agonising pain later, and you have a choice of the prescribed painkillers, or Brunswick's herbal remedies, you'll be in the perfect position to make an informed choice

I would recommend reading some of Brunswick's other posts before you take any advice from him. He's being anti something because he likes to be the underdog rather than because of any particular scientifically proved benefits (of course he'll be along to post a youtube video to prove me wrong shortly, but I don't feed trolls so I will be ignoring if, please all do the same or he'll keep going forever)

Having had kidney stones, I agree with everyone else saying take the Diclofenec and be done with it, it may well be excruciatingly painful if you do not. I've not noticed any side effects with them anyway so hopefully you won't either. Drink as much water as you can possibly manage (I found I could get through about 4 litres a day comfortably. I was in the toilet all day, but I wasn't in pain and that was the main thing) Alcohol is probably a bad idea while on painkillers as it may reduce the effectiveness.

Different things cause them in different people but the common causes are under consumption of water or over consumption of tea, leafy green vegetables and chocolate so it'd be wise to moderate any of those if you eat/drink a lot of them. I used to get through about 10 cups of tea a day so that was probably it for me, I've switched to green tea most of the time and a couple of cups of Tetley a day instead now and so far, nothing's come back.
