Exclusive: Leeds fans fuming as star Harry Kewells signs to Galatasaray
By Michael Morgan 6/07/2008

Harry Kewell has sparked outrage at his old club Leeds by joining Galatasaray on a free transfer from Liverpool.

Kewell, a serial underachiever at Anfield following his £5million switch from Elland Road five years ago, controversially signed a two-year £40,000-a-week deal with the Turkish champions.

The Aussie international winger, 29, opted for a move to Istanbul even though Roma, Portsmouth, Celtic and Spartak Moscow also wanted him.

And his decision has left horrified Leeds fans furious with their one-time hero.

Eight years ago, Kewell was a member of the Leeds side beaten 2-0 by Galatasaray in a UEFA Cup semi-final first leg in Istanbul which went ahead just 24 hours after two Leeds fans, Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus, had been murdered by hooligan Galatasaray followers.

Ray Fell, chairman of Leeds United Supporters Club, said: "Many of our fans will be appalled by Kewell's decision.

They will see this as callous, uncaring and a real kick in the teeth to them, the two lads who so tragically lost their lives and the football club.

Advertisement"I am shocked and extremely disappointed that a member of that Leeds squad, who along with his team-mates, the families of Kevin and Christopher and everyone else connected with the club went through the trauma and sadness of that occasion, has signed for Galatasaray.

"For us now to have to see one of our ex-players from that sad time taking the applause of Galatasaray fans will be sickening." Asked whether he thought the club would make any official statement on the matter, Fell replied: "I have no idea - they might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.

"But that will certainly not be the attitude of our fans. Let us just say that, from their point of view, Harry Kewell will not be welcome back in Leeds."

WTF ? Leeds fans need to grow up. Kewel is a professional and got the best deal there I'm sure. Why would he consider Leeds ? All that club did is sell him to make some much needed cash when it suited them.

Who gives a toss what Leeds fans think ? Damned if I could care less.

it was'nt the football club that stabbed those blokes so cant see why they should'nt get a player in that respect.
Besides, if we were all to live our lives not doing things because someone we did'nt know died then we'd never leave the house!

Well, he DID take part, in a rare moment of non-injury, in that game where two Leeds fans got killed. Did it really mean that little to him?

He didn't stab them personally did he?!

It probably means something to him, but he shouldnt turn down a team just because of a few fans and one incident.

I bet Starry will have a few words to say on the matter.

It's real Liverpool-style over grieving by Leeds here. 2 people died - sad enough, but to be bitter at an ex player who has nothing to do with the club anymore is just stupid!

I think Ken Bates is trying to sort out a deal so that Leeds fans only have to cry 1 tear in each 100.

" signed a two-year £40,000-a-week deal"

The only thing that will interest Kewell, and he is a professional footballer.Might get 10 games out of him so not bad for £4m !

How precious of Leeds fans: by the same logic, no Italian should ever sign for Liverpool because of the Heysel disaster.

At the end of the day the only real loyalty in football lies with us, the fans. Do the Leeds fans really think that Harry Kewell would turn down such a big final pay day and not sign for Galatasaray out of loyalty to a club that he played for years ago?

FFS: football, sport, life in general is full of these moments when something tragic happens, but we don't let our every decision be commanded by them.

As Laura says, there's something just a little bit Scouse about the way the Leeds fans quoted are reacting to this.
