He didn't want to retire from T20 but was told (by the EBC) he couldn't just retire from ODIs.

No need to panic, he will carry on with his T20 and one day batting style in Tests as usual.

Kevin Pietersen quits international limited-overs cricket

BBC Sport - Kevin Pietersen quits international limited-overs cricket

England batsman Kevin Pietersen has announced his retirement from international limited-overs cricket.

The 31-year-old made his debut in 2004 and played 127 one-day internationals and 36 Twenty20 internationals.

"I think it is the right time to step aside and let the next generation of players come through to gain experience for the World Cup in 2015," he said.

"I still wish to be considered for selection for England in Test cricket."

South Africa-born Pietersen, who has an English mother, has been one of the most successful England batsmen of recent times since he qualified to play international cricket by serving four years in the county game.

Managing director of England Cricket, Hugh Morris said: "The England and Wales Cricket Board is disappointed by the timing of Kevin's decision less than four months before we defend our ICC World Twenty20 title.

"Kevin is a world class player and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his efforts and we look forward to his continued contributions to the Test match side.

"As the programming and planning for ODI and T20 format cricket are very closely linked we have a selection policy that means that any player making himself unavailable for either of the one day formats, rules himself out of consideration for both formats.

"The selectors will now replace Kevin in both the ODI and the T20 squads."

Pietersen, who played a key role in England's ICC World Twenty20 triumph in the Caribbean in 2010, had been expected to be at the forefront of the side again during this year's tournament, which takes place in Sri Lanka from 18 September to 7 October.

"For the record, were the selection criteria not in place, I would have readily played for England in the upcoming ICC World Twenty20," Pietersen commented.

Surprised by this, thought he would quit tests first.

I don't really understand the ECB's logic. They've got seperate captains for the 20/20 and they add players onto the ODI squad just for the 20/20 matches

I think this is from the fall out from him being fined for his Nick Knight comments. I wouldn't be surprised if he jacked the test matches in at the end of the summer, he's our best player by a country mile and one of the few who justifies the outrageous charges for tickets in England and the ECB have treated him like dirt.

Shame on them.

I think it's just an excuse. KP, who has been fairly bored of ODI cricket for a while, probably got the hump after being fined by the ECB for his comment about a commentator (don't get me started on wtf that has got to do with the ECB...), decided that he couldn't be bothered to play a format that he didn't like for the ECB if that's how they are going to treat him, to which the ECB have responded by cutting off their nose to spite their face by saying that their best batsman isn't therefore allowed to play Twenty20 cricket. Farcically egotistical behaviour all round.

I don't know any of this for a fact, btw, but it's just my reading based upon the timings of these announcements.

edit: I see crodo beat me to the punch. I agree with everything he says.

Rubbish. He's a South African who pledged his future to England when he realised he wasn't going to get in the South African side, told everyone how much he loves the team, yet sulks when things doesn't go his way, made an arse of the captaincy because of his ego, only puts in a performance when he feels like it despite his claims of working so hard and now despite his alleged love for the team has quit the one-day format. At the end of the day though the only thing that really matters is that he's south african. He shouldn't be playing for us.

There's quite a long history of South Africans in the English cricket team, him going still leaves three.

I'd stay well clear of the Olmpics Athletics as well this year if you get this angry

Pietersen is South African. The others are part English, part South African. Very different. And I hate the olympics, so no worries about me steering clear of that. :)

His MOTHER is ENGLISH. In what way exactly, does that make him NOT 'part-English'?

Rubbish. Pietersen, like Trott, has an English parent (I think in Pietersen's case it is his mother, and Trott's father). Neither are like Mouritz Botha, the England second row, who qualifies solely on residence grounds.

He has an English mother. Surely he's part English as well...?
