18 miles from Warrington to Liverpool

40 miles from Brighton to Portsmouth

Both as the crow flies and twice the distance. I know a couple from Warrington who run a pub down this way and even they admit they sound a bit scouse.

The distances are completely irrelevant to your argument I'm afraid.

The accents are quite diverse up that end of the country over relatively short distances in a way that doesn't really have parallels in the South anymore.

It's relatively easy to spot the difference between a Preston accent and a Manchester one for instance.

People from Warrington (born and bred) don't sound like Scousers at all.

I should know, I lived in Warrington for 3 years and am married to a Scouser :D

Kerry Katona sounds nothing like a scouser, and isn't one because she was born in Warrington.

Fair enough I lived up in Manchester for a while and agree the accents are different over small distances. BUT they are different between Hove and Moulscoomb ;)

I know, there are even slight differences between villages in Sussex where I grew up.

I've never understood why the difference up there are so extreme though. It's remarkable.

 i suppose it goes back to when transport between areas was a lot harder etc

I suspect it's more to do with the supposedly unified pronounciation of English originating from the South and a London accent dripping into all areas of the South East.

I've no idea really, but I do find it interesting. When I lived in Warrington everyone thought I was from London, although I could spot those who were from London and those who weren't.
