But as they are only allowed to bat for five more overs, the lead won't even be 'that' big.

Obviously our batting line up will collapse this afternoon to an innings defeat, but still
Would be interesting to see how we perform 2nd innings. We should just bat through this arvo and all day tomorrow.... Oh, but this is Sussex!

It’s now Kent’s highest ever partnership for any wicket!!

And now the second highest second wicket partnership in county cricket. I remember the highest - Jameson and Kanhai putting on 465. These two could have beaten that, I reckon

And Salt is out in the first over!

That's what I mean about the batting letting us down. Podmore's a good, solid county bowler - nothing spectacular, probably on par with Claydon but we're making him look like Malcolm Marshall

Just realised that Stevens didn't get his customary runs against us - that's bound to be a Michelle then

Our bowlers? Four kids and two county cast-offs (one of whose last F/C match was more than two years ago)

So, only Claydon and Garton really count - and they're bowling on a road

Sussex have four really decent F/C bowlers (two are on test duty, one is injured and one is stuck in SA). This has been a tough learning curve for the youngsters but to pick on players who have scarcely a handful of F/C appearances is a bit out of order

To be fair, I was ignorant of the side put out. But 450 odd for one doesn't like they're up to it!

I appreciate there are particular circumstances , but pound for pound, This is the worst Sussex Team I have ever seen play a county first class match.
I’m almost glad Ollie isn’t there to prop us up, as it means Gillespie will get a real clear idea about the merits of this XI

Let's look at the side:
Claydon - a good solid pro
Crocombe an 18 year old playing his second FC match
Haines - a batsman who bowls a bit
Garton - a 23 year old playing his 15th FC match
Meaker - a bloke who's been away from cricket for two years
Rawlins - a batsman who bowls a bit
Carson - a 19 year old playing his second FC match

It's harsh to expect those players to take loads of wickets on a gem of a batting wicket.

You weren't there for the Hampshire match in 75? Hants scored 401-5 (and that's after getting Greenidge out in the second over). Sussex were then bowled out for 153 and 115. We had two test players - Snow and Greig - in our team so imagine how bad we were.

There was also one game around then where our seam attack was Denman, Marshall and Philipson - that must have terrified the opposition

I was only a baby then! I’ve seen some Ropey teams over the past 35 years though, particularly in the mid 90s. This is a new low though. If they played a half decent UCCE Team, it would be close.

Fear for Sussex here. They’ve been standing around a field for 120 overs in very hot conditions and now need to bat 100 overs themselves to save a game.

There were circumstances around the mid-90s, a lot of experienced players left/were kicked out. Hence the Night of the Long Knives in 1997 led initially by Lester and the appointment of Moores and Grizz.

Amazing parallels with the events at the Albion.

Back at Canterbury, Sussex have really got to dig deep to save this. I wonder if this is Finch's last chance - he's got all the time in the world, batting on a featherbed against a reasonably friendly attack. If he fails on this, when is he going to succeed?
