Quite a distressing read about Ken Valder in The Guardian today. There does seem to be a lot of issues with the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust.

Ken was a friend of mine so obviously it is a distressing read. Words fail me, what use is an apology? My wife works for the NHS so I’ve always defended them but it is literally at breaking point. Sadly Ken’s wife has also passed now. The inability to turn back time is so frustrating.
Apologies if my words appear clumsy, I don’t know what to say.

In early November, it was agreed he needed an endoscopic ultrasound examination, but this did not happen until 10 January 2022 due to equipment failures, administrative error and public holidays.

The problem is, it seems completely taboo for any politician to dare to suggest that a health service that is free to everyone that was designed for the 1950's, when the population was 20 million people lower and people died when they got to 70, is completely the wrong model for today's world. I find it bizarre that this is such a taboo viewpoint, when the NHS has had more money pumped into it in the last 10 years than ever before. So if it really is so chronically under-funded, then surely the model is broken and is completely unsustainable?

It is not an honest conversation, you mention change and its jumped on as if you want the USA model... no.

I think only us and Cuba have this set up? If it is world leading, why is that?

That's the thing - people jump to "Do you want people to die because they can't afford insulin like the US?". Like the only two possible models are everything free for everyone, and everyone pays for everything. As if there is somehow not a model in the middle somewhere that is actually designed for the country in 2024.

As you say, probably not the correct thread for it. RIP Ken.

as someone with a relative who had been working in an ‘improvement’ team within the NHS I’m not surprised. The amount of arse covering and reluctance to take ownership of issues raised is staggering.

I knew Ken as well from a long time back. Lovely guy.

I knew Ken from school as his younger brother was in my class. Always saw him at away matches in the 70s and 80s or going to or from games at this time. Always ready for a chat about our shared passion of BHA and football in general. It's a real shame about his issues with the NHS and the lack of understanding or moving forward with his case, not just letting things stagnant as a life was on the line. Like the Commander says, Ken was a lovely guy.

As somebody very reliant on the RSCH for various aspects of my health this makes worrying reading. I can’t imagine how dreadful an experience this has been for the family. Interestingly my wife waited 21 days bery recently for a GP appointment as she was concerned about ulcers and infection in her mouth and throat. She then saw a throat cancer specialist within 5 days at the RSCH (on a Sunday morning), had a follow up at the PRH a week later with a camera into the throat and was declared ok. Sometimes, some of the process works well, other times it dreadful. It took 18 months for the RSCH to complete a biopsy to confirm my (asymptomatic) non Hodgkin’s lymphoma - a complete shambles and it’s was only due to the persistence of one specialist that it happened at all.

Ken was a very dear friend of ours who we still miss.

This breaks my heart.
