Wow! born too late was I, balls. How I wish I could've been there.

Matthew fisher of Procol Harum, and Gary Brooker likewise to other greats of the Prog realm... Shame they fell out, life is clearly too short for such bollocks.

Yep, saw Procol Harum and Argent too. Mind you Hold Your Head Up is my worst ever earworm, stuff of my nightmares!

Never a big fan, always found the Nice and ELP too self indulgent but I appreciate how big and how successful they were.

Likewise. Preferred the Nice (who I saw live at a students' union Friday night dance) to ELP, but the man was certainly a master of his craft. Another icon gone. RIP.

Lord above... Awful, awful and unexpected news. I know he'd not been too well, but I had Lake down to go first... Alas it's most definitely been the year that the music died thus far.

Ritchie B: please keep on until I get to see the Rainbow rise once more in June, please God I beseech thee.

RIP Keith, and thank you kindly for the music.

Kosh

RIP Keith.

I reckon Lemmy had some pact with the devil and once he was gone, it was the signal for loads of others to follow in quick succession. Must be one great party going on down there at the moment although it might be difficult to get to the bar.

Just saw the news on BBC. God, what an awful year for rock music. Another one of ours gone.
I used to see Keith Emerson with Gary Farr and The T Bones down at the Aquarium rooms. Anyone else have those memories? It was clear then he was brillant on his Hammond.
Gary Farr has passed too.

Durrington High comp was formed in 1973 , long after Keith Emerson would have left school .

Durrington High is on the site of what used to be Worthing Technical High School (all boys), which was one of the two schools you went to in Worthing if you passed the 11+ And we're a boy. I went to Worthing High School for Boys (1964-1971), which was in Bolsover Road and went on to become the Sixth Form College. Tarring was a "secondary modern", so Mr Emerson presumably did not pass his 11+.

And that is in no way meant to be snobby or judgemental, because plenty of talented people didn't in that stupid system.

RIP Keith Emerson, another name gone from the formative years of many peoples musical awareness. Not everyone's cup of tea, a bit too flamboyant but a real showman and a heck of a player.

Old school musicians like Emerson, the late Jon Lord and dear old Rick Wakeman with their grounding in classical works could do justice to any genre.

Good call with the nods to Georgie Fame and Rod Argent, often overlooked in such debates.

The late Ray Manzarek and Rick Wright are both missed for their differing styles.

Fortunately we can still appreciate decent keyboard players like Chris Stainton and Reese Wynans with their impressive CVs who are happy to avoid the full glare of the spotlight and just let their playing do the talking.

Gary Farr has passed too.

When did that happen?

I knew Gary when I was a kid. He worked for PD Wharfage at Shoreham Harbour for one summer. He wasn't earning enough from music at the time so had a 'real job' to pay the bills.

He took his own life. Gunshot wound to the head.

When I first read that I thought you were talking about Bobby Crush in response to the previous comment so I googled him first, saw he was still alive so thought you were just making a joke. Then I found out it was actually Keith Emerson you were talking about. Bit of a shock as I had assumed he'd died of cancer or something as I had read yesterday he was quite ill a couple of years ago with colon cancer.

The Dome 2 December 1967: The Nice, Amen Corner, The Move, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and forget who else but still have memories of The Nice and particularly Keith Emerson being easily the second best on what was quite a bill.

That's quite a line-up. How come you remember the date but not all the artists?
