So call out the ideology then. I don't think the vast majority of Muslims are terrorists either. Fact is if the billion + Muslims were Buddhists the world wouldn't be in the position it is now.

You would literally have to go through the Koran and read out point by point and I could tell you one by one which ideologies I think need calling out.
Exactly as I'd have to do with The Bible.

Was Buddha a violent warlord? What about that Jesus figure?

They seem in every way very different characters to Muhammad the warlord in their background stories and attitudes.

People love to throw out the Nazi term when anyone calls out Islam yet the irony is good ole Muhammad was a Fuhrer to the core of his existence.
The God of the Old Testament, the basis of Christianity and Judaism? Not violent?

Do you think it's all just a coincidence regarding the Nazi link then?

If so I have some magic beans I'm selling that you may be interested in?

Probably not but it is still not entirely clear whether it was a direct reference or a very general comment. I don't believe Hopkins to be of high intellect more an individual with an eye to the main chance. An opportunist. She didn't give a lot of thought to what she said but then neither did a lot of the posters on here who immediately rushed to the conclusion that it was a Nazi reference and only a Nazi reference.

Well, f*cking 'No' right back.

Go out onto the streets with a pen and a clipboard and ask 1,000 random people what the words 'Final Solution' means to them.

Sorry I'm not a member of Mensa, or my name's not Lucy Worsley - but that phrase meant nothing to me.

Have a word with yourself. It is an explicit reference to the Holocaust.

Different people interpret things in different ways. Just because you interpret something a certain way, it doesn't follow that everyone else does.

I'd be surprised if there were many educated people who didn't interpret "final solution" as a Holocaust reference. I can't recall ever seeing the phrase used in another context.

Most educated people would consider that it was likely that it was being used in a way to suggest mass killing, which " the Final Solution " has come to symbolise but their intelligence wouldn't allow them to rule out the possibility of her words being used in a much wider/broader context.

Which is why she quickly altered it but got fired anyway. If she could defend a wider context I'm sure she would have done so. She didn't care to, because no such context exists.

I appreciate we all move in different circles, and have different backgrounds and ages etc, and I'm sure not everyone knows the gravity of the term. But, significant numbers do and will. And therefore a significant number will have found her comment disrespectful/distasteful etc. Just because you and your chums don't know something it doesn't mean everyone is the same.

As an aside I'm certain if I asked all my friends, who cover numerous nationalities, they'd all know.

This. Obviously.

Can't think of one other single meaning of 'Final Solution' that would resonate.

Not even if today's match between Chelsea and Arsenal were to finish all square on penalties with all available players having had a go.

The meeting that took place at the Wannsee conference in 1942 where the details of the Final Solution were discussed is genuinely one of recent history's most infamous moments. It set into motion one of the most barbaric, murderous phases in modern warfare and established one of the darkest periods in human history. I'd be genuinely surprised if a large portion of the population didn't know the term.

For those that don't, do take a minute to read this:

We do need a final solution to the current problems, which is basically a war of a kind. Apart from Katie, no one knows in which context she used the the expression final solution. Can anyone honestly claim that she is suggesting that Muslims should be gassed, put in ovens, worked to death or sent to concentration camps? For ages people have been looking for any excuse to have ago at her or have her removed from broadcasting. Too many people are behaving like members of Erich Honeker's Stasi. Sadly there are those who consider the flying of the Cross of St George to be an offence. Before we look for a final solution, I'm not aware that we have found a first solution yet.

Yes, just had a word with myself and despite the Jewish blood in my family, still can't bet my mortgage on it. Still, you are completely sure, so we had better let the matter end there.

Suggest you read some of these other posts. There are people on here absolutely convinced it is a direct reference to the Holocaust.

Ah. One of the "I'm having the last word" brigade, eh?

You've had plenty of opportunity to explain what the "wider context" is, but rather than do that, you've simply asserted that there is one, and left it at that. In other words, you're a bullshitter.

And please explain why having "Jewish blood in your family" has anything to do with it. You're trying to say that you have Jewish blood in your family, so you must be right? Do me a favour.
