Mitoma isn't going to sign a contract purely to make Brighton more money if he were sold. He's doing this to keep his options open in my opinion.

If we get to Europe and consolidate ourselves as a European team, then he'll be happy to stay for the duration. If we tail off, at least he'll be on a bumper contract while the bids come in

And apart from anything else, this is a statement of belief. This is one of our most saleable players saying they believe in the club and are willing to bet the best years of their career on us being able to give them what they want football-wise.

Other saleable players who maybe umming and ahhing about whether to take a similar leap of faith will be taking notice

Of all our lusted after players I reckon he is the most likely to stick around if we can give him European football again next season. A less money driven player I can’t remember. Of course this is just supposition with no evidence to back it up, just a gut feeling, that he is happy here and can fulfil his ambitions with us
Yes, I have the same feeling about Mitoma. I have no evidence to back it up of course but I do think Japanese football fans seems less impressed by the lure of the big six than we have seen elsewhere in the world. He is an absolute icon with Brighton and I think they appreciate the connection...

I'm not saying it's the only reason he would sign a contract, but it may well be a factor (maybe coming from the club's side, than his). Sure he's keeping his options open, but if the club gets an unbelievable offer for him from a CL club, then it would be hard to turn down (by the club AND the player himself.)

(These thoughts/views might be influenced by watching Ali Mac in action last night against PSG. The same Ali Mac who signed a contract extension before the WC and was gone by the end of the season...)

It's clear this summer we're going to see some bids for our top players (Pedro, Baleba, Mitoma, JPVH). If a new contract happens then its good work by the club to either keep Mitoma here, or guarantee us mega money for him. Need to sort JPVH a new contract too!
I am sure the club are working on this

You can add Bart to that list. I think we’re going to get some big bids for him in the summer. A number of big clubs including Bayern, Man United, Man City (putting possible relegation aside) Chelsea and possibly PSG are all looking for new keepers this summer.

Out of all of them, Mitoma is the one I’d want to keep the most as I think he’s the most special and unique player and hardest to replace.

I did think as I watched last night that Bart would be a massive improvement on the keeping I saw from the PSG keeper. Sanchez level of distribution and a penchant for punching catchable shots. He was very lucky defenders got in the way of so many shots.

If only Bart could start moving the ball out quickly rather than pissing about for 30 seconds with it.

But conversely Bart would have lost that penalty shootout, whereas Donnarumma is a fantastic shot stopper under pressure, as he proved against England not long ago.

Wind back a sec.

You'd prefer Verbruggen to Donnarumma?

His lack of interest in money is nice but he lack of interest to play in the best teams and win titles seems slightly odd - but if he's happy, I'm (more than) happy.

I actually think he is interested in titles and highest playing level, but it does show he’s happy here, and won’ not interested in just the money side of things. Fingers crossed this all goes through nicely.

Luis Enrique would yes.
Great that you seem to have such an insight to his thinking

But judging by Verbruggen's penalty record (of not having got near enough to one to feel the air being displaced), if he had made that swap they would certainly be out of the Champions League

I think the PSG manager wouldn't swap the PSG keeper for the Brighton one

Bart Verbruggen has played in one shootout in European football, with Anderlecht against Ludogorets.

He saved all three penalties.

For someone "not interested " in money He signed a new contract with us only 18 months ago and aren't we also are one of the" best teams. ?"

(granted if Real Madrid or Liverpool or Bayern came looking - not Saudi Arabia - we'll see if he stays)
