Kanchelskis in Albion link
by Andy Naylor

Albion boss Steve Coppell today raised the intriguing possibility of the Seagulls offering Sussex-based Andrei Kanchelskis a route back into English football.

The 34-year-old former Manchester United, Everton and Rangers winger is training with Albion after a spell in Saudi Arabia.

A move to the Seagulls for Kanchelskis, who lives in East Grinstead, has not been discussed but Coppell has not ruled it out.

"We haven't discussed it and his registration is held by the Saudi Arabian club," Coppell said. "I've no intention, but if he becomes available he is local and it might just slot into place.

"When you look at what he has won in the game you begin to see he has an awful lot going for him and even in the bits of training he's no mug.

"When he is on the ball you can just see he is a good player. He's been there, done it played on the highest stage, in Italy the lot. He's just a top quality player and he seems a good lad.

"There is no intent, but you never know with these things. At his age and with what he's done and the moves he's had for millions and millions of pounds I wouldn't have thought money would be too big a problem.

"It's not as if he will be playing to make money but playing for tick over money because he just enjoys playing football."

Kanchelskis had been training by himself since returning in May from a five-month stint in Saudi after starting last season with Southampton.

"It's good for me," he said. "It's better to train with a team than alone. It was only my second day today, so I am a little bit stiff, but it's okay and I am enjoying it.

"There are some good players here and a good atmosphere. I hope to train here for two weeks and then we will have to see what happens."

Kanchelskis has an option of another year in Saudi, but would prefer to stay in England.

"I had four or five months in Saudi with a good coach from Holland who has worked for Ajax and Werder Bremen, but it is too far for my wife," he said.

"The two kids are at school here and we like it in East Grinstead, where we have lived for two and a half years. It's a nice place."

Captain Danny Cullip resumed training today after a thigh injury and he is on course for the big kick-off at Oldham on August 9.

so basically he's training with us for 2 weeks...may aswell be a 2 week trial as SC never gives anything blatantly away in interviews and this one the same.
Seems to me as though he could be on the cards to sign for us

but I'll wait until its official before getting excited:D

sign 'im up. Coppell wants it, Kanchelskis wants it, let's do it baby and add some some excitement to our decidedly average team.

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
Blimey Dwayne I agree.
Him and Knigth and the bit of sparkle that Bob and Booker used to provide.

Come on Dick. Sort it.

At work - probably
Hmmmmmm...interesting. As one or two people have said - I reckon there's more to this than meets the eye. Imagine him speeding down the right wing and giving some decent service for a big strapping centre forward and little Leon to feed off. If Piercy plays as well, there could be quite a bit of creativity in this side.

Meopham, Kent.
It would make sense to me that he signs on a pay-per-play basis.

He would want to play at a higher level, but the live game with QPR would be a perfect "shop window" for the fella.

It's not a simple as that though is it. He's contracted to another club. There is no chance of him playing in the Q.P.R. match. We would have to be in negotiations now for that to happen.

After two weeks we may find we like him and he likes us. Then fingers crossed his club will let him go for free.

I find this pretty amazing, how on earth has he ended up living in East Grinstead, not that there is anything wrong with the place but it does seem a bit strange.

It is a pretty intriguing prospect having him play in the famous stripes, he has cult hero written as large as the number of letters to spell out the name on his shirt. I know there are lots of different factors in this but the fact that he has begun training with us might mean something, especially if he enjoys working with the coaching staff and gets on with the other players in the squad.

We may have lost Bobby but Andrei is the kind of player worth paying your entry money to see. After all he has won in the game what better way to round your career off than with the glory of winning a Division 2 Champions medal?

It's perfectly simple. The article says he has the option of another year, which implies that it's down to both parties whether or not he stays. And he's already said he wants a move to England.

This "two week" talk is all a smokescreen. You don't need that long to see player of Kanchelskis's quality. If both him and us are happy a deal will be knocked up in a couple of days. Who knows, they might even be discussing it now?

A first I was sceptical but now I'm really excited at the prospect of him burning down the right (yes, right) wing. He was an integral part of what was, IMHO, the best Man United side ever and could be a superstar for us as well.

Could'nt agree more. If he wants to play and SC thinks his fitness is Ok he would definitely be a decent addition for a season's contract.

If SC is seriously considering giving him a contract I just hope the guy who does the medical is not that bloke from the Simpsons !

Fingers crossed !

PS - Come on SC, we still need a 6 ft plus thug up front.

a medical doesn't determine whethera player is prone to injury, I'm sure Kitson was fit and well when he joined.
