I think we're seeing a player who has only made 6 Premier League starts over the last season and a half. Can't believe City were asking a 7m loan fee in return for 18-19 games from a player they didn't need and who was obvioulsy going to be rustier than the steelwork at Selhurst.
Brilliant line!

Wonder if those that were saying he would into our team are having second thoughts

You know Southgate will stay loyal to Phillips, just as he has stayed loyal to Maguire and Henderson.

It will be fascinating to see his next move. There's no way Leeds will be able to afford his £150K a week wages, and even if they could there's a risk he may never recover his old form. I fancy he'll take the Saudi shilling.

It's the Joao Felix of loan signings...

In Phillips, are we seeing a player who was absolutely perfectly suited to an individual manager's style of play (Bielsa's), but is struggling to adapt to anything different?

This has always been my view of Phillips. Set him up as a quarterback in a Bielsa style team and he's golden. Anything else, he struggles. I read today that West Ham don't want him permanently and that City will be trying to offload him in the summer. This guy sums up the quandary of him as a signing.

I do wonder though... Could he be a player who'd be undervalued because of time out and current form? Would he consider salvaging his reputation and international career to be more important than maintaining his wage level? Could we use a player with his attributes, sitting in front of Dunk as a second player who could rake balls out to the wingers? Did Pep not use him because he couldn't master the short game and playing on the half turn? If rejuvenated, could he provide the defensive cover that's been missing since Caicedo went? Is his bolt shot after injury problems? I know none of the answers - Just thought him an interesting proposition. The news story I read suggested City are hoping to recoup about £30m, so it's probably a pointless question anyway, as Tony will certainly take that sort of punt on a player who costs him little or nothing, but hasn't ever spent serious money on one.

Shame, good player that immediately improves a rival team.

It really should not be possible to accommodate Phillips, Ward-Prowse and Alvarez in the same midfield though. No pace, no width and no creativity (save for a decent set-piece delivery). What would you call it? A 'treble pivot'?

In fact Moyes and Southgate are just about the only two managers who'd even try it.

I started a thread around early November on how we should have gone for him on loan....

Phillips isn't better than the other two they already have. he improves their squad, rather than their best XI, IMO).

I just don’t consider Phillips to be significantly better. And that’s not even factoring in that he hasn’t played for two years.
*cough*

West Ham should have paid ME some stupid consultancy fee, and I could have saved them many thousands of pounds* (and a few PL points).

If Leeds go up, he's nailed on returning there. I'm not ruling it out even if they don't

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I could see the value of having a player with that line in raking diagonals in this side

I don't think he'll continue to play s*** for ever, like Barclay, someone will get a tune out of him. It's just with the high wages and fee / with that level of risk and limited selling on potential, I think we should leave the usual suspects to slug it out

The guy seems a complete waste of space both on and off the pitch. No thanks.

Like Rice did for England? Stepping on Dunk's toes, making him shrink and slink out to left left back behind?

Mind you, Rice is a good footballer.
Dunk would be able to boss Pip around!
Question being whether Pip could bring anything to the ta.....

No, f*** off. Phillips? £200K a week? To sit on the bench? And add another inch to his plaits? You can shove that up your bollocks.

If he wants £200k a week, he wouldn't be coming here. anyway.

Can’t believe in the current climate anyone would pay that! Look at the three serial over payers Everton, Palace and West Ham. Everton now won’t, The Hammers definitely won’t. That leaves the Nigel’s then.

£30M? That's not some fantastic out-of-our-range figure. We (or TB) aid about that for Pedro, didn't he? If Sock-boy examines his finances and decides he could just about scrape by on £50K a week................

.....................he's not

I’d rather we signed the 17 year old Peruvian Kalvin Phillips (currently playing in the Ecuadorean third division)
