Is John Fashanu referring to 'not gay' as in 'not happy'? That's why Justin killed himself, I guess.

I read something about how Justin Fashnu played professional football in the english leagues for a couple of years after he came out, and that he was a born again christian (with his particular version of the christian faith being one that frowned on homosexuality, and was disowned by John. Something that is often forgotten by people who try to link his death directly to homophobia in football.

His death wasn't caused by homophobia in football. It was caused by an allegation of sexual assault from a 17 year old boy in America, and the fact he believed everybody around him thought him to be guilty.

But anyway, that is disgraceful from John Fashnu. He's the real attention seeker.

True. However, the short hand narrative that many people seem to have is 'Justin Fashanu was a footballer and came out as gay, and look what happened to him.'

Not enough has been done to challenge that gross over-simplification.

I knew I was forgetting something else that played more of a part than homophobia in football.

John Fashanu seems to flip flop on the issue of his brother coming out depending on who is asking. I sort of see his point about his brother selling some fairly sleazy stories when he did it though.

His daughter came across well n that documentary though.
