A child murderer has been killed in Worcestershire's Long Lartin Prison, the Ministry of Justice says.

Two prisoners are being held in police custody after the death of Subhan Anwar, who was jailed in 2009 for torturing and killing a two-year-old girl.

Anwar is understood to have been held hostage in his cell at the Category A jail before he was killed.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said: "An incident at HMP Long Lartin on Thursday February 14 resulted in the death of prisoner Subhan Anwar.

"Two prisoners are now in police custody and the matter is being investigated by police."

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "West Mercia Police has launched a murder investigation after a 24-year-old man died in Long Lartin prison last night.

"The body of the man was found by prison officers just before 8pm on Thursday, February 14.

"Two men aged 47 and 45 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody."

Anwar was jailed for a minimum of 23 years for the murder of his partner's daughter Sanam Navsarka.

His partner Zahbeena Navsarka was cleared of her daughter's murder but found guilty of manslaughter and jailed for nine years.

Anwar and Navsarka, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, were condemned for their cruel and selfish treatment of Sanam.

The violence inflicted on the youngster happened near the end of her life.

Her tiny hand prints and bloodstains were found inside cupboards at the home in Huddersfield and also at a former property in Batley, West Yorkshire.

Both her thigh bones had been fractured, causing fatty deposits to enter her bloodstream and resulting in her death, and she had fractures to both her arms.

how anyone can think a prison sentence in one of our jails is justice for the brutal murder of a toddler is beyond me! IMO you should lose protection from human rights the moment you intentionally and callously take someone else's.

It seems a shame that two men will be charged with the scum's murder.

I feel that I shouldn't, but I hope they made him suffer terribly before he died. Scum that treat other human beings like that don't deserve to be treated as human beings themselves. I'm just always uncomfortable that this means we have to make someone else into a murderer, but otherwise I'd fully support the death sentence in such cases.

At least he's not costing us to keep him in prison any more.

agreed, he should be tortured, death by paper cuts would be good. might take a while but it would bloody hurt!

Will be interested to see what the two suspects are in for. My money is on long stretches where they have/had nothing to lose by killing this fucker.

I am generally anti death penalty. However, when it comes to scum who hurt innocent kids like that I actually think the death penalty would be too good for them. Glad he got his in the end.

I personally would also explore the option of keeping these people alive and having them heavily scrutinised psychologically over their lifetime to try to work out exactly how a human being can lose the empathy that stops them from doing something so horrific. It would be useful to identify these traits prior to the atrocities being committed so that we can save another life in the future. I don't think the deterrent of capital punishment works with people who are so maladjusted. Totally understand people's fury, though.
