The person who finds the cheap, pollution free, inert, easy to produce and use that is so versatile alternative will run the world.....

It occurs to me that it would make more sense to have a thread about all the shitty things oil companies and governments do, or don't do, about the climate.
Then all the people who broadly support the protesters and their aims can do something vaguely constructive.
And all the people who think they're entirely ineffective and just posing can get on with ignoring them.
Of course it may turn out that running out in front of major public events is, in fact, a more effective way of drawing attention to the issue than politely pointing to some political/environmental scandal taking place 3000miles away.

Well that’s my point, most of mine aren’t “far” anything, I’ve had plenty of work people, and random comments who support them. I just depends where you go and who you associate with.
Interesting. I personally would guess 90%-95% don’t support the way they’re doing things. Just a guess mind. Based on comments online etc. I think age may come into it a bit too. Time will tell… If NSC is still here and we’re all still alive in what 5 years’ time or so I’m sure this thread will be littered with apologies from those who were wrong and condemnation of the 2020 era JSO protests…If we’re all dead I’ll happily accept the egg on my face 😜 And yes, that is tongue in cheek before anyone takes it seriously!

i dount they are well versed in the science, just the mantras. if they were into science they might be pushing more for tangible solutions, like carbon capture or alternative energy, rather than licences in the North Sea.
they would be better off pushing things that work, like planting trees. a lot harder to monetise than carbon capture tho.............hmmmmmmmmmm

The Earth is about 24k miles in diameter.
Point of order: Earth circumference is 25k miles approx. Diameter is 7.9k miles therefore ignoring the earth doesn't spin on a vertical axis, there's about just under 4km difference between distance of the poles and the equator from the sun.

I don’t know - it was clearly an opinion. Do you know they will happen then?
it's a likely hood of probabilities.

you do understand that the only way climate change deniers will comprehend the reality of the situation is when we are all dead?

If you can catch it and harness it before it gets here.

Once it's here it's too late.

From what I understand the Earth is EXACTLY just the right distance from the sun to make it habitable for life.

The Earth is about 24k miles in diameter.

Taking the distance in straight line from the sun to the equator and sun to the poles is F all really, maybe 12k miles? And look at the difference in climate between those places.

It's insane.

The person who finds the cheap, pollution free, inert, easy to produce and use that is so versatile alternative will run the world.....
Slightly boring fact alert.
it's true the earth is in what is known as the "goldilocks" zone in the solar system, as I understand it the difference in temp between the poles and the equator is to do with the amount of atmosphere the sun's rays have to pass through, rather than the distance from the sun (the poles being set at a more obtuse angle, hence more atmos to pass through).

So do you know it will happen or not? Yes or no question?

Yes, that is the only way. How many years are you saying we will all be dead by?

Weirdly just went to YouTube and this came up - 1700 people died in 2 days from climate change in the UK last year apparently… Is that correct?

I don’t think they did at all - and here ours the problem with the ‘worst case’ and ‘false info’ brigade. They hear something and twist it into a fact when it quite simply isn’t anywhere close to true. If anyone can agree with this lad, feel free to post so and provide the data 👍

The assault comes from the fact there seem to be men who are launching milk cartons at women’s heads. Not saying you personally think there should be assaults, just there seems to be a lot of people saying they’d smash a middle aged woman’s face in.
Just to add onto jackalbion here, I'd say the overwhelming majority of my colleagues (civil engineering consultancy) are broadly supportive of the protesters.
Of course, being engineers we are also deeply cynical and spend half our time trying to reduce how much concrete we use to cut carbon emissions and the other half filling holes with concrete to save time.

I've had a quick Google and can understand the possible implications for energy supply and consumption.

But what about plastic uses? In our everyday lives there is no other material available that we can use.

Food packaging is a prime example.

Unless we go back to war times, abolish supermarkets, and go back to the days of local greengrocers, butchers, fruiterers etc where everything is fresh and weighed out in paper bags then plastic packaging that can be sealed and pumped full of nitrogen to stop it going off then there is no real alternative currently is there.....

But that will only increase demand from people in cars having to travel to each place to buy food as there's no way we can go back to corner shops on every corner for all your food needs. Society wouldn't allow it, supermarkets are huge convenience stores and the clue is in their name.

Get rid of plastics, the main use for oil as far as I know and think, (not petrol and diesel as many believe) and that would massively help.

so you've not grasped cause and effect yet?
And this is the issue with a lot of those that are backing these protestors for me - they can’t see any way other than their own opinions / theories.

Let’s literally break this down and show your complete inability to debate or reason with other people’s opinions as it’s a classic trait for many with the viewpoint of you and JSO and the reason they get taken apart in debates every time.

Again, I am not a ‘climate denier’ or whatever you choose to call those that don’t agree with people disrupting innocent people’s lives. I think there is good change happening and we need to look after the planet.

You pulled me up for saying a clear opinion of ‘Think they are more concerned with personal attention than the climate and many brainwash eachother to believe the worst case scenario which won’t happen’.

You asked me if I knew it wouldn’t happen.

I said ‘no I don’t it’s clearly an opinion’ - I cannot predict the future or guarantee anything so won’t post anything with conviction on definitely happening as ‘fact’

You then had 3 chances with options of ‘yes or no’ to answer if you ‘knew it was going to happen’. EXACTLY the same simple question you’d asked me initially.

You failed to answer yes or no 3 times - which stinks of arrogance and ‘I’m right’ attitude.

You then throw in the sneering patronising of ‘do you know what time is’ and ‘you’ve not grasped cause and affect yet’ - incredibly patronising and uncalled for - because I disagreed with your theory - note there has been no such sneering from me in this exchange as I genuinely don’t know the answer for sure (nor do you btw).

You’ve also refused to answer my question of how long before you think we’re all dead - answer it?

You then pull in the safety net of ‘depends what happens’ as, for me, when we’re all still here in 5 /10 / 15 years’ time and you’re proved wrong, you’ll say ‘I was right and luckily we made X Y and Z changes because of people like me’ - so cannot be wrong.

And that is why extreme left / extreme climate theorist / extreme any theorists will never admit fault, admit wrong or be wrong in their heads. And patronise anyone challenging their view as ‘not as smart as me’ whilst they’re at it. It’s ugly. Goodnight x

It’s his experience / opinion. I work with 15/20 people and every one has denounced these people and the disruption they’re causing.

I’ve spoke to many clients and people in completely differing industries (vehicle leasing etc) that have all denounced them too.

That’s just my experience.

lots of plastics can be made "naturally" with sunflower oil for example, costs more tho.

i think people should be taking this issue seriously now, especially those with kids, we've already wasted 50 years

The French are well on their way to eliminating plastic packaging in fruit and veg, a new law on introduced in Jan 2022. It can be done....

I’ve also noted not one of the JSO supporters on here bothered to send their condolences to the poor bloke who’s wife miscarried their baby and JSO heaped more pain on him. Not one to sympathise for the poor bloke who had to spend a night in a lay-by in his lorry because of them, away from his family etc. I thought the left were meant to be peace and love etc - load of tosh if this thread is anything to go by. Poor and speaks volumes for me.
