[News] Just Stop Oil

This issue is echo chamber silliness to the nth degree.

You’ve got the same five or six people liking every “pro” post, the same with the antis, and nobody listening to each other.

I am reminded strongly of Corbyn’s election campaign. There are an enormous number of parallels. You’ve got the right wing calling him a dangerous criminal, you’ve got the left wing absolutely convinced he would win and shouting down anyone who says otherwise.

The bigger picture is to take a look at what the wider public are saying.

36% find Just Stop Oil “very unfavourable” compared to 4% who find them “very favourable”.

You could also take a look at all of their social media, where the highest positive ratio’d posts and replies are critical of their methods, actions and public perception.

Confronted with these facts, supporters go into siege mentality (just as with Corbyn) - namely by saying in as many words and often outright “well everyone who disagrees with us are idiots”.

Which, as I’ve said a million times, doesn’t win hearts and minds.
the facts can be explained for people, but not understood

Investment in renewables - ffs were being rinsed, no new gas and oil licences. It’s not f***ing difficult. - the Saudis sit on climate change advisory boards, oil companies spend millions upon millions on law suits and lobbying govt’ - we’re drowning in plastic, it’s in our bloodstreams ffs. But yeah some interruption of Wimbledon is the real issue. That and the fatalist attitude we’re all f***ed anyway so let’s do nowt. And yeah anyone who has the balls and energy to actually protest deserves ridicule and attack. f*** me. What a f***ing world. Those fuckers are winning and being cheered on it seems. Anyway, rant over.
Just trying to educate myself. By renewables do you mean More wind farms, Sola panels and heat pumps on houses. All battery cars. It does seem odd that no replacement has been found for plastic.

I haven’t read all 42 pages but where are the Insulate Britain wallahs? Have they given up the ghost or is JSO orange their new project? I suppose you could compare them to football fans - every year wanting the new club shirt - but with lest angst. :drink:

Top rant. You can tell if you're on the right side of the argument by using the Daily Mail Index: if the Daily Mail think it's good, it's s**t, and if they keep running front page headlines slagging something off, it's good. I saw "Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP" on twitter yesterday - "Britain has turned against the eco-mob and only the Conservatives will stand up to them". That should tell you everything you need to know.

Yes But what needs doing to stop climate change ?
Stuff that most people are probably not going to like including :

> Ban all petrol cars ( thankfully new ones banned from 2030 )
> Force people to switch their gas boilers to heat pumps
> Create flying credits so everyone can only fly so far every year
> Ban oil and gas extraction
> Cut back on imports - tankers create a huge amount of emissions
> Refuse imports and business from countries that don't cut their emissions by x% in a certain time
> Force manufacturers of electronic devices to recover precious metals from their old devices rather than mine more

As far as I can tell, the oil industry’s approach to managing all this is:

1. Work as a cartel, co-fund lobbyists internationally through industry groups

2. Delay and weaken environmental regulations for as long and with as much impact as possible, mainly by insisting that they’re “part of the solution” and lobbying hard at all international climate meetings.

3. Inject propaganda into the news system spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) into the capabilities of any technologies capable of replacing oil.

4. Strongly hint that any stronger legislation would cause a production cut, raising prices at the pumps and causing any government attempting this serious unrest.

Using these tools they’ve pushed back the adoption of alternative technologies by about 20 years, despite being fully aware (at least in Exxon Mobil’s case) of what the consequences of doing so would be.

These organisations have held us to ransom for well over two decades, and the only way we can loosen their grip is to move away from their product. We have to get away from oil.

What I have noticed is that almost to a man we all agree with their cause. Most agree that oil should stay in the ground. Yet our anger is mainly directed at the protestors rather than the government who continue to do what we disagree with.

We all know the results of not taking action now will be far worse than a bit of a disruption to social and sporting events yet this is where we direct our focus and discussion.
It’s the politicians and the supine media who try to direct the focus and discussion away from the key issues so that they can continue business as usual. Amazed how ITV/BBC just parrot the right wing Govt. angle. I think you are right that many in society now think it’s a problem, awareness has increased. This is progress forged partly by dramatic non-violent protest. Still a long way from meaningful action however, but if anyone has better ideas of what to do, let’s hear it. Writing to your MP, petitioning your local council or standing quietly with a placard will get you precisely nowhere.

Yes, solar, wind farms, tidal energy etc. The technology is there - the political will is not. Look at the roadblocks oil companies put in the way, take a read of the legislation they’re trying to pass on a California and the naked, blatant disruption big oil is throwing in the way, We’re being played for morons, single use plastic and the proliferation of plastics enriches fossil fuel companies and nations. Plastic is an incredible material, it’s used in hugely harmful ways. It’s not necessary. The apathy of great swathes of the population is no accident. It’s by design. FFS I thought my rant was done. Insulate Britain have been proved right and were ahead of the curve. Properly insulated homes in Britain would have saved many people a significant amount of money. They are people who are trying to make a difference for the greater good.

CO2 emitted by burning fossil fuels increases global temperature. Please forward everywhere.
The likely catastrophic effects of this are listed elsewhere in this thread.

sure there is, can use wood, do without so many plastic items, or make plastic from vegtable oils.

you do know insulation mostly comes from oil based sources? extra layers of non-synthetic clothing is the answer here, not more plastic. invest in sheep farms.

Planet will be fine. It was here long before we were and will be here long after we're gone. That's why I laugh when I hear "save the planet" from environmentalists. The planet will be fine. It's the human race that's f***ed. And even then. I think there's a small chance we might be able to innovate our way out of it. Or at least subsist in small groups of hunter gather communities in touch with nature a la the native Americans.
I doubt there would be any threat to the human race from global warmng. If the Ice Age were finally to end, then presumably the planet would go back to how it was before - immensely fertile, and with vast tracts of land restored to habitable condition, eg. Russia, Canada, possibly Greenland, Antarctica.

Here is an irony. Mrs T is very keen on recycling. Rather than put it in the landfill bin, we have a special bin for non-recyclable plastics. She drives across town in her petrol car with a big bag of this stuff every couple of weeks, because there is a special recycling bin at an out of town supermarket. We generate tons of it.

I haven't had the heart to suggest it might be better to not buy all this shit that comes in non-recyclable plastic.
