In this case, I'm on his side. Peaceful protest is legal in this country.

He was wrong about Withdean, but he could right about this. Hope he appeals.

Such issues need debating are a worthy use of public funds.

Smash EDO stages regular protests. Although many people at Smash EDO protests do not commit criminal offences, disorder and criminality has been a feature of a number of the protests."

Many people do not commit crimminal offences....that means some do...therefore it is not a PEACEFUL protest... I understand that Mr Catt has a solicitor daughter and is a serial complainer......come the revolution....

On a general point, I think it's a good thing there are people like Mr Catt in our society. We may not agree with him always, but we live in very apathetic times. There have been some laws passed in the last few years that have been used for all sorts of purposes that they weren't designed for.

So good on people like Mr Catt, at least some people are bothering to keep an eye on things. Even if is sometimes drifts into an obsession.

I personally feel that democracy is safer with eccentrics like him around. Simply because it generates a debate.

Yep, the type of good old excentric who would buy an expencive house next to a football ground just so he could complain about.

Still, not much else for him to do, in his dotage, and so much better when the public at large pay for all the costs of him & his 'principles'.

Ok, you've persuaded me to overcome my apathy: let's start a "Smash 'Smash EDO' " group. Personally, I think it's criminal the way that group picks on a single company - surely an infringement on EDO's right to run a lawful business? And from the reports I've seen, these protests usually seem to go further than is reasonable from a "peaceful protest".

(There... That should set this thread up for at least 20 pages of angry bickering!)

The general point that's being made is that there are times when the authorities can overstep its powers against the individual. Catt is testing that case.

On a more mundane level, think of the outcry when the Albion STH got banned for three years after the Palace game, when there was no perceived sense of redress. The person in question had to go to a more neutral authority for a hearing and a right of reply.

The similarities are about - on their own level - civil liberties. The difference is the scale, and hence the cost.

That doesn't change the fact that he was being a total prat over the Withdean issue, of course.

Anyone who disagrees with the right to protest would have loved living under communism.

Personally I'm glad I was brought up in the free world.

Each to his own.

Don't think many on here complain about 'Peaceful protest' Smash EDO is not a peaceful protest....violence and damage seems to be the aim as the word 'Smash' indicates....We got Falmer by peaceful protest.

High up on the South Downs.
Freedom is great.
Catt is free to squander tax payers' money in pursuing his petty legal cases against the Albion, the Police and any other organisation he wants to whinge about.

State house arrest in Withdean for him! He can use his drawing skills on perfecting a view of the North Stand to keep him occupied.
Any more nonsense and he should be exiled to the Shetlands.
