Don't want to put it into the joint account, as don't want the Mrs to know about it for a very good reason, she is having Chemo at the moment due to breast cancer and I wanted to surprise her and book a holiday for next year when she is over the hell she is going through at the moment. The rebate was a lot more than I expected, so was thinking of using one of these chq cashing places as can't really be arsed to open a new bank account just to deposit the chq. Anybody have any ideas or recommendations ? Cheers

Can't you just look after the banking for her, seeing as she'll be pretty tired etc, so she won't notice?

Don't most of them take a massive wedge as a percentage though?

do you have someone you trust you can sign it over to put in their bank account?

Talk to your bank. I imagine, given the circumstances, they'd be able to open you an additional savings account fairly quickly and easily to put it into.

Good point actually. IF you bank on-line you might be able to easily set up an account in your name that's not connected. You can deposit it there. You can likely get that done tonight with little hassle.

How is she getting on mate?

Struggling, she has had 3 sessions, 5 more to go, hair all gone, its really tough, but she has the support and love of me, her friends and her family. Can't wait to tell her we are going on holiday it will put such a huge smile back on her face !

About 5% I think, but don't care too much about that as wasn't expecting the windfall anyway !

But that's still 5% you could spend on her! Good luck, hope she enjoys your surprise.

Hope she is on the mend soon mate. I'm certain your bank could arrange something for you due to the circumstances. Why get ripped off if you don't have to? Take her somewhere She would never have dreamed possible. She deserves it

Trouble is if you use a cheque cashing place you get the money, minus a significant fee, in cash. Then if you go pay for this holiday in cash you don't have the protection you would had you put it on plastic. If anything goes wrong, you're safe if it's on a Visa or Mastercard, but handing over your cash to a firm that goes tits up is just waving goodbye to your rebate.

In this current climate you can't be too careful. I'd just spend a little time opening an additional bank account. You can very easily open a basic bank account with no credit facilities which will just give you somewhere to put the money and a debit card to use for spending it. As already mentioned you'd probably find it's very quick and easy if you just speak to whoever you currently bank with about it. Just don't let them try and sell you something different that you don't want!

Just open another account with the same Bank - they will do it straight away, just take ID into the branch, including photo ID.

Don't throw money away on a cheque cashing place - that's just for desperate people who have no Bank Account at all.

And you cannot sign over a crossed cheque to someone else so that's a non-starter (it WILL be a crossed cheque).

Wookie i went into Barclay's the other day as been having some trouble and spoke to a banking adviser and they set me up another account there and then, was really easy, i dont pay a fee for the account just a standard account. Probs your best bet, alot of these cheque places ya have to join for a fee then they take a big cut, i think 10-15%.

Cheers for the advice , I guess I am a bit impatient and just want to book things now instead of having the hassle of opening a new account and waiting for the chq to clear ! Just want to cheer her up as soon as possible !

can understand that, think we would all be the same in your book, but the account is active from the moment you set it up and its 3-5 days for a cheque, ya should do it that way mate as you be losing a big chunk of your money. But at the end of the day its what makes you feel happy and if you feel that ya need to book it tomorrow then do it mate, there are far more important things in this world than money as im sure your sadly finding out.
