Indeed this is a trick they've been successfully deploying for a couple of centuries now and they are pretty damn good at it. When I was first studying politics back in the early 70s there was a lot of (well informed) speculation that the working class Tory vote would (quite literally) die off: The generation that looked up to Toffs as the natural party of government - the deference vote - would fade away and Labour would become the natural party of government.
This clearly didn't happen and amongst other things under-estimated
a) the skill of the tory party to adapt with the times;
b) the power of the right-wing press (no coincidence that the one time Labour looked like fulfilling this prediction was when Blair leapt into bed with Murdoch)
All rather depressing for some of us. I'm afraid.
there is a counter point, that many people just dont like what the Labour party serves up or how it presents it. disparaging the working class Tory as not knowing their own mind, is part of that.
which is in alot of cases cleverly perpetuated by the right. Many ghouls and dark forces working in social media controlling opinion

The Tories are exceptionally good are convincing poorer people that somehow they are on their side. Tapping into the red wall with socially conservative policies amplified by continual culture wars seems to be the theme of the day, and of course get the offshore media billionaires to do the heavy lifting - this status quo suits them too
Meanwhile we continue with greater inequality and some of the worse social protections and pensions in the western world. Maybe Johnson did aspire to tackle some of this but his shambolic handling of Covid combined with an ugly Brexit is likely to put pay to this
Indeed. Lying to the Queen about proroguing Parliament... fine. Anyone else... resign !Perspective is a funny old thing ...... Calls for Nicola Sturgeon to resign after " appearing to lie to the Scottish parliament " said the Scottish Conservative party ! It seems that to lead the Government of the UK means its ok to lie repeatedly, but, woe betide you if you are a Non English party leader ! Lying gets a Vote of Non Confidence... you couldn't make it up !
