Just had a letter from the bank cancelling my debit card..

.. apparently a major retailer/bank has had it's systems hacked, and anyone who has bought from them over the last few days is having their cards cancelled and new ones sent out.

Called the bank, and they would not divulge the name of the institution, but it appears to be one of (as they wanted to confirm recent transactions)

on the basis that I work closely with them, and also have a number of cards on the system, and have purchased goods over the past week and have not had any issues with the cards I use on there.

Lovefilm may be owned by Amazon, but I am 99% sure that the card charging systems are entirly seperate.

Bollocks, have just spoken to the Nationwide and they don't want to know, so now having to email the Olympics Ticket site, and suspect it won't be good news.

I work for a bank and my bet is lovefilm. the reason for this is that most other companies on the list... eg: the supermarkets would have no need to retain customers bank detailes. Love film on the other hand would take monthy payments from customers and would therefore keep bank info on thier main systems. If the systems are hacked... Happy days for the fraudsters. Saying that the extent of the problem will come down to how your card is charged. I would be less concerned if a lovefilm subscription is taken by a direct debit and more concerned if it shows as a debit card payment on your statement. if this is the case any potential fraudster has the ability to use your card to purchase goods and services online or by telephone just as you would a takeaway. This would explain the bank cancelling the card and sending you a new one to combat that potential problem. hope that helps

Scenario one - I got a phone call a while back the course of the conversation went something like ..
Them ..."Hello you need to make an appointment to come in to review your account"
Me " What do you mean need to ?"
Them "Sorry what was that?"
Me "Well if I dont make an appointment am I breaking a law?"
Them "Erm no"
Me "Then I dont need to make an appointment - please remove me from your list of potential appointmentees!"

Scenario two
I opted out of receiving paper statements a while back and chose instead review my account on line (which I regularly do) I recieved a letter yesterday in which "I notice you havent checked your account on line for the last 9 months" and "if you havent checked your account online after 12 months we will automatically send your statements in the post". Nice to be spied on ....having tried to do my bit to save time and paper I've now got to reply to them ....what a waste of time ....

I'm making no guesses on whom the problem is with, but note that Amazon also keeps a record of many customers' bank details for speedy ordering.

Its just a guess. I could be wrong. the same would apply with amazon and to an extent LV insurance. LV insurance would be sort code and account number records for direct debits so less of a concern.

Lets roll with lovefilm or amazon OR BOTH (AT A GUESS)
