all say what you want about Barnes, but if he did what Ulloa did today this forum would be in meltdown.

Absolutely right. Though 2 differences is he has previous form in terms of sendings off and for now NSC love Ulloa, whilst 20% seem to not like Barnes.

Well he has got a history of getting himself sent off in a silly fashion

yh couldn't agree more......just would be nice to see some more consistency from him. A more consistent barnes would mean a decent Championship striker IMO

But the reason he isn't consistent is because he is regularly played out of position. Hardly his fault.

This I also agree with entirely - Would love to see us drop the Holding man in midfield and see us in a standard 4-4-2 with Ulloa and Barnes up top...........

Having said that, im not sure we have the correct personnel available in midfield for just the 2. Maybe he has to be sold in order for him to ever be played as a natural Striker. Cant see it ever happening with us all the time we play 5 across the middle

he's our only striker atm, but and its an observation, on the big occasion, he is found wanting. How many winners has he scored and he also needs to stay on his feet more. I want to see him score in the next few matches, i'm watching.

I don't know how you're defining winning goal? For example, Barnes scored v Millwall, El Abd made it 2-0, then Millwall got one back. Because El Abds was the second goal and it was a second goal that gave us the win, one might argue this means Barnes's goal wasn't the winner. But, if you take his goal away we only draw the game, so it's clearly important to the result.

Also, you have to factor in the importance of a first goal - they can begin a rout, they can give us a confidence and comfort that allows us to extend leads since we're a little more relaxed in our play. Would El Abd have netted if Barnes hadn't scored the first - would we have been in a position for him to do so, would he have hung back to avoid going one down on the counter if we didn't have that goal lead?

And then there's the killing off factor of a second or later goal in a rout.

(have bolded the matches in which his goal is chronologically "the winner", or games where we only scored one but got something (i.e. not 2-1 losses) and he got the goal).
2012/13
-First and fifth, and two other shots were deflected in by CMS in the 5-1 victory over barnsley
-Scored the first v Millwall for a 2-1 win.
-our only goal v Blackpool in 1-1
-first v derby in the 2-1 win
-first v birmingham in 2-2 draw
-last 2 v Blackpool in 6-1 win

Take his goals away we lose 6 points

-our first v Arsenal in 3-2 loss

2011/12
-first 2 in 3-1 win over Cardiff
-second in 2-2 draw with blackpool
-only goal v bristol in 1-0 win
-second v leeds in 3-3
-our only goal v palace 1-1
-last two v ipswich in 3-0 win
-first v cardiff in 2-2 draw
-second v derby in 2-0 win
-our only goal v Birmingham 1-1

Take his goals away we lose 9 points

-only goal v gillingham, giving us cup progression
-consolation v liverpool
-equalised v wrexham, taking us to a penalty shoot out (which he scored the first goal in. Brez saved wrexham's first and that was the difference. Without Barnes's goal, it would have gone to sudden death).

2010/11
-Our first 2-1 win v Walsall
-Our second 2-0 v plymouth
-Our first 2-1 v oldham
-Our first and third 3-0 v peterborough
-Our second and third 3-0 v Exeter
-Our second 2-1 v exeter
-Our first 4-2 v Bristol
-Our second and third 4-3 v carlisle
-Our only goal 1-0 v oldham
-Our fourth 4-3 v dagenham and redbridge
-Our only goal 1-2 v southampton
-Our only goal 1-1 v colchester
-Our first 2-3 v huddersfield
-Our only goal 1-1 v Notts County

Take his goals away we lose 15 points

-Our second 3-1 v portsmouth (cup)
-Our only goal 1-0 v watford (cup)

Progression with the watford round.

2009/10 (only 8 appearances on loan)
-Our third 3-0 v Tranmere
-Our second 2-2 v southampton
-Our only goal 1-0 v southend
-Our first 2-1 v Bristol

Take his goals away we lose 6 points.

It also ignores the assists he has, the free kicks he wins we score from (though I agree he needs to stay on his feet more)

Thought we looked OK, annoyed Ulloa saw red but so be it.

I would be far more concerned if I was a Reading fan, they looked pretty average to say the least.

:nono:

While we're at it we could make the starting players only wear 1-11, tell Amex that we don't really want their sponsorship, take the roof off the North, offer to only have one substitute and make sure the players spent half time in the centre circle sucking orange quarters.

Are you trying to be funny? I mean accusing him of being an armchair know it all so soon after suggesting your own tactics for us to play?

Your irony detector appears to be malfunctioning.

Seriously if you think there's any chance at all of Oscar playing 4-4-2 you're probably watching the wrong sport.

I agree actually GB. Theres not a cat in hells chance of seeing a 4-4-2 mate. Was just trying to find a formation that allowed us to play 2 out and out strikers....... 3 at the back?
Not feeling too great hence my abruptness, will take irony tablets at once

Not sure there's a lot for either side to complain about in terms of the referee. Their board is full of blustering idiots claiming that, yes, Pogrebnyak went down like a dying swan, and yes, he was clearly aiming to win a free kick, but that because there may have been a slight touch by the defender, it's 100% a foul and therefore no matter how much he exaggerates it, isn't worthy of a card.

Obviously it was, being flagrant cheating.

The Ulloa incident was another obvious and inevitable red for dangerous play. I really can't see that he did anything wrong that cost either side the game.

I haven't read any of these posts as I tend to get easily drawn into what people are saying, will go back after. Just back from the game after a few pints, admittedly.

What is the point in the short goal kicks? Did nothing but put pressure on us away from home. PiG also obviously got bored and just launched a few balls upfield aimlessly with no-one up top.

I haven't seen the replay but I think Ulloa was in the wrong place at the wrong time.. Put his foot up trying to get to the ball, their player put his head down, their fans and players were baying for blood after their sending and the ref got pressured into it. I don't know..
Pogrebnyak was embarrassing by the way, for someone who is not only built like a Russian brick shithouse but is also on a booking, diving like that.. Jesus. Shameful. Drenthe was also SHIT for them, and was lucky to still be on the pitch at HT when he got subbed.

Spanish Dave was terrible today. Utterly terrible.. Not really much more to say, he was just awful.

Ward is solid, but is too afraid to run at men. He isn't the paciest, but he needs to get forward more. Cost us many times by not getting forward down the left.

Andrews was a revelation, however. Strip Greer of the captaincy now, THIS is our man.

Also, Reading's official car park is ****ing shite, as were their supporters and their team. They wouldn't have scored if they were out there all day.

We played ok, would've been happy with a point beforehand but not afterwards. Guilt-edged chances for Crofts and Lopez, and how that one that Barnes hit the post (?) with didn't go in, I don't know. We looked better with him on the pitch though, I know that much.

I think the closest we'll get is more 4-1-2-1-2. In which you could put Calde or Bruno, Upson, Greer, Ward / Bridcutt / Andrews, Croft / Spanish Dave / Barnes, Ulloa. That seriously lacks width though and as our main loan signing is a wide man be prepared for more 4-3-3 with one winger. It's the one Poyet thing that Oscar hasn't looked like changing.
