Not so sure there are many ways to get out of it these days .. did read somewhere it was 'your civil duty'?! You used to be able to defer it for up to a year then when you were recalled that was it .. you must attend.

I know when I received my 'call up' papers I almost fainted with the shock! BUT I absolutely loved doing it .. had a tax evasion case (by a barrister FFS) so was an easy conclusion in my view!! Lots of hanging around doing not a lot so be prepared for that .. Zzzzzz!

It is an interesting experience.

Just discuss the case down the pub with your mates, and let the court know your mate Billy the Brush reckons the bloke's guilty. Hey presto, you're off the jury.

I did a 5 week fraud case at the Old Bailey in the 80s, the case was interesting but the dynamics of the jury were the best thing about it. I'd love to do it again.

I agree, the jury were BIZARRE, especially the way that they made me foreman because of the way I read the oath, which for an atheist, was plain bonkers.

LA...wishing it was devon..
did a stint at chichester about 13 yrs ago.... was initally told i was called up for 2 weeks....mighily peed off as it was the start of my summer hols.... but, only ended up doing 3 days. one trial... bastard didnt show at magistrates court and so referred to crown court. he was sent down.. now that was not pleasant to witness..its just like on the telly..
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" eeek... subsequently read write up in paper and the git had done so many other things that were not allowed to be mentioned that i felt vindicated. wed all decided after three hours of discussion, but were told that we had to carry on... into the next day.. quelle surprise.. all bored..and still the same verdict.

I got excused years ago - told the truth that I could not get to the court without either taking a train from East Grinstead to Croydon then travel back down to Hove (I think Lewes was closed at the time) or take a bus for an hour to Crawley and change onto the train. Either way would have taken around 2 hours each way and they excused me without questioning this.

I did it for 2 weeks in Brighton. 2 weeks of turning up at 10.30 and being home for 4.30, which beats my working day. Even got a voucher for tea and biscuits.

A mate of my dad's got out of it by writing a letter back saying something like "Dear sir, I would be delighted to do jury service but can you make sure the defender is black, that would be perfect" He indeed got out of it and was never asked again. :lolol:
