Didn't get out of it, but I did it last year and was quite honestly the most painful thing I've ever done ! That said, once I eventually got a case it was very interesting, I was foreman too !
Did it a few years ago, and ended up with a 10 week case. Bloody loved it. Was originally called up while I was in Oz and so they just delayed it until after I was back.
A lot of people managed to get out of doing the long case, but not known anyone to be able to get out of it completely.

I managed to get out of it because it was set for the week after I was moving to Bristol to do my work placement year. I am fortunate that my parent's friend is a barister and she helped me word the letter so that they would excuse me from it.

1st time I was doing my exams at Uni. Although they initially rejected that as an excuse (seriously!), at the second attempt a letter from the departmental head at the Uni got them to change their minds.
2nd time I was working for a team of consultants and we told the courts that pulling me off the project (no sniggering at the back!) would result in the contract being cancelled. To my surprise, they accepted this first time.

I enjoyed my service. Sent down a right wrong 'un for stealing a lawn mower. It was like a comedy as he was half deaf and had forgotten his hearing aid. The judge and lawyers all had to shout at him

I would like to do it for the experience. Unfortunately, I thought the letter was a circular and did not open it until it was too late. No consequences.
I have done a coroner's inquest and that was on a hot day in a crowded courtroom and was unpleasant.

Do bear in mind that you can be 'invited' to do jury service more than once in your life. I recall seeing a Judge recently instruct that the members of a jury after a long Crown court case should not be nominated for further jury service for another 5 years. Initially they all looked relieved that the case was over - but then several looked gutted at the thought they might have to do it again someday!
Was intriguing to see the adversarial legal system in action - and a highly paid defence barrister present a very plausible defence although the evidence was overwhelming that the defendants were guilty.
Worth spending an afternoon in a public gallery at Court just to see the wheels of justice grinding away, well mostly anyway! But do choose an interesting case when a verdict and/or sentencing is due. I found it very dramatic to see the Jury give their verdict followed by the Judge sum up and pronounce sentence and if custodial then tell the security bods to 'take him/her down', then hear the door slam shut.
It is an interesting opportunity to visit a proper higher category Prison and find out just how unpleasant it is, even as a visitor. Don't think the average punter really understands this. Wouldn't do any harm to let a few scroats at risk of going off the rails have a 'work experience' visit to a Prison, might just deter their wrong doings.

Depends where you do it.
My wife had to do hers last year at Hove. No free food OR drink.
One of the cases she dealt with was covered by national news too.
I got my call up before she got hers, but I got out of it with no probs.
I run disabled kids to/from school, backed up by a letter from the company.
Some of the kids can get a bit difficult to deal with if they have a change of routine.

If you know the person in the dock then you can't be on the jury.
