What a shame. I suspect that close family or friends of this player were expecting a windfall. Our club obviously didn’t agree.

Very disappointing for the Paraguayan club and maybe even the player himself.

We've signed dozens of players just in the last few years from South America, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Austria and all over the UK.
I think Albion are quite capable of doing a deal, even complicated ones. They're also quite capable of walking away from them if they don't suit as well...

This. 100%. We don't know the facts. Maybe a phone call on the way to the airport on the Paraguayan M25 (hows the career going Pritchard you mercenary) or maybe something about him being "owned" by a 3rd party (I hate that term).

We know that IF there was a way to get it done, we would have.

Not agreeing personal terms doesn't have to mean he was greedy, there's lots of parts to this deal. It may be the realisation that he wasn't going to be playing in the Premier league next month and instead would be heading out who knows where on loan.

I’ve been to places in the world where you do the deal 100 metres away from where the negotiations were having having just walked out but you then get a tap on the back when they realise that you are serious. No surprise if this happens although it does leave the door open for some other club (Newcastle) to jump in.

Yes. Because thats how most reasonable observers think Albion's recruitment works. They've probably one of the best recruitment set ups in the PL.

So we insist, quite rightly, to pay him for his 20% ownership(roughly £1.0m) in England where he will be earning a living, thereby meaning that he will have to pay English tax of circa £400k. If we'd have paid him in Paraguay we would probably have had to stump up his UK tax bill and that just wouldn't be right. ( I caveat the above that I'm not a tax specialist but I know a bit).
Seems the young man is pretty greedy when he could have gotten untold riches from a lucrative career in the EPL playing for us and potentiall others.
In a fit of pique he calls the deal off. I bet his club aren't too pleased knowing that they were about to receive £6m.
He's obviously a young, talented man but I'm glad we stood firm on this.
Compare to Kacper Kozlowski who wanted to come to Brighton as he knew he'd be playing first team football, initially in Belguim rather than in Liverpool's academy. So his motivations are footballing ones, not taxes.
We also get Deniz who seems pleased as punch in his new Brighton shirt and Jeremy Sarmiento who has impressed with his talent and character.
Good result I say.

Exactly. I referenced the Pritchard saga, look how his career is doing (L1 Sunderland if you didn't know) after being greedy.

Not saying that this kiddie will come to regret it, but karma is a b1tch.

Sorry you feel that way. My comments were borne out of frustration at the club being unable to get the deal for Enciso over the line. He is going to be a wonderful player, I think, and it's just such a shame that he won't be playing for us.

This is the key bit:

“Enciso has 20% of his own registration rights, which isn’t unusual in South America, so besides Brighton’s agreement with Libertdad, they had to reach a deal with the striker for his part as well.

And while Enciso wanted to receive his amount in Paraguay, due to different tax rates in his home country, the Seagulls wanted to pay him in England.

So he decided to turn down the move.”

Seems the player would have picked up £1.6m if the deal was £8m but he didn’t want to be paid in sterling? Very sad if this is true.
