Our village beacon in rural Northants was a seriously underwhelming experience.
Perhaps 80 of us (out of a village population exceeding 1500) gathered on the football field to see what amounted to a small brazier on a 10 foot stick being lit by our eldest resident. After a few anxious moments, while the wind threatened to extinguish the cloth taper, it took and burned for 10 minutes or so after which we retired to the cricket pavillion to sup ale watch the Queen light her beacon.
Pretty much all the village turned up for the West Hoathly beacon. Then it was down the pub drinking Diamond ale until 1am in the local, the Vinols Cross pub was heaving for hours. A great community weekend loved it.
Went to the one on the Otley Chevin, in W Yorks. Quite impressive (must have been impressive to the people on the planes landing at Leeds Bradford airport just behind too).
As ever though, typical f'up by the authorities. It was located on a narrow road that runs from one end of the ridge to the other. It was heaving with traffic parked both sides of the road, and when it came to leaving total gridlock as cars trying to go both ways. Would have been so easy to make the road one way and avoid such chaos. Thankfully we'd parked in the town and walked up, but I can imagine there were some people stuck for a fair while!!!!
