A lot of pressure on Towell if we get an injury then. Hard to judge him off such little playing time for us. I'd also throw in the fact that he appears to be an extremely attack minded player which is a great option to have BUT isn't as useful if we're 2-1 up with 15 minutes away from home and Sidwell is limping off.

Different opinions and all that but I'd personally feel much more positive about the season ahead if we had another all rounder in central midfield and Towell starting the season as a 5th choice CM and a 3rd choice smaller striker to play off Hemed/Murray with a chance to prove his worth in the League Cup.

Towell is 24 now. If he's not good enough to be fourth choice central midfielder for us then, to be honest, he shouldn't be here.

Personally, I thought he did well at Wednesday considering we went down to 10 men soon after he came on and it was pretty much his first game

Not really. If there's an injury, Sidwell would presumably step in, with Towell then becoming the back-up option. He did enough in that second half of the Sheff Wed away tie to indicate that he deserves more chances, and can step up to high pressured situations. He was also playing that defensive midfield role then, as we were down to ten men for most the time he was on the pitch -- which just goes to show that he's adaptable and intelligent.

There will be games where we play 4-3-3 this season, in those cases it would mean Towell playing the full 90. Whilst I agree his debut was promising, let's not forget that Abdul Razak looked absolutely incredible on his debut.

I hope I'm wrong and Towell is a revelation this season, but as I said I'd feel more comfortable with someone like Cousins in the mix too.

I doubt we'll go 4-3-3. We started off last season by ending games that we were winning with a kind-of 4-1-4-1 formation. That might happen again. I also would be more comfortable with Cousins (who has always stood out as a solid player whenever I've seen him play) in the squad but if it's the choice between getting Cousins as a fourth choice CM (which is probably what he would be) nudging Towell out from that slot, and spending more on a new forward, I'd prefer the latter.

Agree with that.
We have an abundance of riches out wide - Knockaert, Skalak, March, LuaLua, Murphy - and maybe Bjordal coming through.
With his physique I could see March in particular being developed as a utility midfielder In the squad to play out wide or ( if needed) centrally as the "fifth" squad CM

How was Dale Stephens on his first few games for the Albion .? If i remember he looked pretty ordinary

Do we take from this that Stephens/Kayal not going anywhere soon?

I doubt it has much bearing, the fact that we have Sidwell makes me expect at least one of them to be leaving. Sidwell didn't drop a division to continue being a bench warmer..imo

No.

I expect we'll bring in 1 midfielder anyway, 2 if we lose 1 of Stephens or Kayal, and 3 if both go.

This assumes JFC and Holla both leave.
