How did the doctor know he was living on Thyme? Surely the man informed the doctor of his herb of choice?

In that case, it surely can't be news he was dreading to here....as he was the one who told the doctor.

How long has he been living on a diet consisting of a single herb? SURELY he should be taking a multi vitamin or so,etching? Won’t he get scurvy and rickets and all sorts of nutrient-deficiency type disorders?

Not if it came into my kitchen. Basil is a classic example. Once you've used the leaves, the plant's essentially knackered.

Secret is to take them out of the pot container they are sold in and put them in a larger pot, fresh moist peat free soil, kept well moist and in the sun. Leave it for three to five days and it will be sprightly and you can harvest , conservatively until the weather really warms up, then they grow like billyo!
