JMr cash has featured prominently on the misic on some of our away road trips and my youngest lad, who used to groan about it, is now a huge fan and has a lot in his own collection.

I saw the tribute band 'Keeping it Cash' at the Komedia last may and they did a tremendous show.

His version of Hurt is an incredible song. In my mind one, if not the, best cover versions ever.

100% agree.

On X Factor every week the judges go on about how the contestants supposedly put so much emotion into their performances - well they could try for 100 years and not come up with any delivery of a song with as much raw emotion in it as that one. Even Trent Reznor (who wrote the song) said after hearing Cash's version that it was no longer his song, it was a Johnny Cash song.

Cash was a musical icon and that song was the perfect way to close his incredible career and life.

I've heard the Reznor comments as well. I read something along the lines of how he put so much into the song but Cash just did it so much better. He held his hands up and said fair cop, you're better. He was incredibly magnaminous and gracious about it.

I have 104 johnny cash songs on my itunes, there are maybe five duplicates, and only one of the songs is ring of fire.

That entirely surprised me.North Stand Chat

Dont get me wrong, Ring of Fire is a great tune, written by his missus about his alleged dalliances. I hate the fact the football and cricket tribes have pinched it.

Agree with all the posts on here. JC was/is a legend.

I'm quite partial to his cover version of Hank Williams "I'm so lonesome I could cry. I've got a recording he did of that song with Nick Cave. It's not on youtube unfortunately.

Still....this is brilliant

As a Depeche Mode fan. I thought the grest man murdered Personal Jesus

I agree with that 100% though the Indie on Friday did a piece on good/bad cover versions and some bloke had it 'better than hurt'

Forget Johnny or Maralyn Manson, Personal Jesus, number368 in Rolling Stones's 500 greatest songs of all time, only a la mode !

This may have been said already, but there is a saying about Mr Cash:

There are two kinds of people. People who are Johnny Cash fans and then there are people who will become Johnny Cash fans. The man is a f***ing legend!

I think that's one of the great things about Cash, cross-generational appeal. My 70 year old Grandfather is a fan, and so am I, a 23 year old.

Hurt is brilliant but from the same album, I Hung My Head isn't far behind YouTube - Johnny Cash - I Hung My Head (2002)

If you watch The Shield, the best cop program on TV (alongside The Wire), they have JC singing 'I Hung My Head' at the end of one of the seasons, and it is jaw droppingly beautiful and appropriate. A fantastic cover.

Hats off to 'Hurt' and 'The Mercy Seat' too. The latter is far better than Nick Cave's version.

No way El Pres! I love JC as it 'appens, but The Cavester's 'Mercy Seat' is unbeatable imo.

Johnny Cash did heaps of great music, but one of my personal fave's is 'Get Rhythm'. Truely skiffle-tastic!! :yahoo:

Heard Depeche Mode's acoustic version? Pure class.

Mercy Seat is my fave Cash cover- that whole build up to the final lie is fantasrtic- I felt let down!
