Not quite. We got him for £125,000 from Le Havre, and offloaded him for £225,000.

Lloyd really didn't want to sell him, and made a point of dicking Sunderland about, to the point where he didn't turn up to sign the release form, delaying his transfer by a couple of days. Something like that.

No Lloyd didn't want to sell him but the bank said £225,000 coming in .................fcuking sell him ...........NOW!

Anyone else remember when we played away at West Ham and the ball came up to Budgie on about the half way line and he performed this classic turn and left the defender totally bemused.It is the best bit of skill i have ever seen live.We went up with a couple of west Ham fans and even they were on about it afterwards.
Absolute legend and like i have said before on here,I have never been so angry when an Albion player has been sold.

YES, I remember it well.
Went to receive the ball on the halfway line, defender at his back, and as the ball arrived he let it RUN through his legs AND the defenders - Budgie had already turned and was on his way up the wing before the defender even knew what had happened. GENIUS.

I also recall a friendly at Southwick in his twilight years, when he received the ball wide on the right, and before crossing it in, he took a cheeky swig from a spectators plastic pint of lager. And we scored from the cross.

I don't use the word LEGEND lightly, but JB was, is and will probably always be my all-time favourite Albion player. He had more flair than a 1970's roller-disco.

The diving header that was the equaliser at Anfield to make it 2-2 after being 2-0 down in 91 was probably the most personally celebrated goal I can remember in 25years of watching the Albion.

I saw on the piss in the Coconut after we'd lost away at Oldham 0-6. He was with Mike Small & I was having a right pop at them. Mike Small walked off but John Byrne was at least trying to explain what when wrong.

I seem to recall what may have his been his last appearace for us, in 1996 (shortly after the York abandoned game). It was the last game of the season at Walsall and we were already relegated. He got subbed and then kissed the badge on his shirt before waving to us.

No doubt someone will tell me that I've got it all wrong!

I remember a game at the end of the goldstone days against chester i think....who were bottom.

We went two nil down....and came back to win 3-2 with John getting two of them....i sat next to nigel kennedy that day!

I was furious when he was sold, I phoned up the club trying to get

I remember his winner at Millwall in our 2-1 win in September 1991. He chested the ball down and hit a screamer into the far corner of the net. My only regret that day was the kit we wore.

that was John Robinson. Byrne got injured in the last game of the season V ipswich and was unavailable till the play off final. The free kick though was fital as from it Dean Wilkins scored a last minute winner to put us in the play offs

Sepember 91 would have been the season after the play-off success. We won 2-0 up there that season but I cant remember the scorers. I think that was the game where John Robinson got attacked by a Millwall fan.

Wilkins scored his best ever goal for the Albion, a free-kick from miles out. Unfortunately we were 0-6 down at the time, and it was so cold we could barely register a cheer.

You probably know most of this already but......!

After years of living on the South Coast, JB still talks with a strong Manc. accent (stronger when he's tired, or slightly inebriated!) and true to his roots, still supports Man U in the Prem, but is totally entwined with the Seagulls as his local team. He has said many times, if he wasn't commentating on the match, he would still be in the crowd, watching and cheering with the fans.
He turns out many times during the year for veteran matches to raise money for worthwhile causes and has donated many of his memorabilia items for charity over the years.
John is very popular amongst ex-players and has stayed in touch with many of his old friends from all over the country, including 'Sneaky' George Parris.
What I love about John's playing ability is his pure confidence in front of goal. John now plays regular indoor football near his home in Hove, and for his old teams in the Masters tournaments - and most recently in the Sky One indoor tournament for Sunderland where the announcer called him 'Legend, John BRINE' and cheeky commentator Ian Wright sullied his praise of John's two goals in the semi-finals by saying he looked 'very rotund!'.

Mr Coach has fond memories of the trip to Anfield - and as he sat in the front row of the South Stand for a while, remembers having funny banter with John as he waited for crosses from corners!

Years later, we became friends with him as he developed a relationship with our son's godmother - (does that make him Lil' Coaches step-godfather?!!) - and he loves his two teenage kids from his first marriage, who now live in Finland with their Mum, but visit regularly.

Personally my favourite memory of John is seeing him sing Elvis on a karaoke game while round there for dinner one night (well, John, autobio's are supposed to be wart's an' all! lol) - and may I say, and I'm a good judge having sung in a band for ten years, he did it suprisingly well!

A great player and a great bloke. The leg'end that is, was and always will be, Budgie. xx
