Frequently listened to Pop the Question (or whatever he called it) while at University in the early 70s. probably the DJ on daytime radio who was most interested in the music rather than entertainment and worth listening to!
And always genuinely interesting when listening to him more recently too. Will miss him.

He was on the radio midday when I came home from St Nick's juniors in Portslade for some lunch in the mid/late 60s.

Played loads of Mott the Hoople before Bowie got hold of them. And Alice Cooper before, er, Bowie got hold of him. RIP.

Lovely man, had the pleasure of being in his company a couple of years ago with him and his lovely wife Tiggy for a music GTG.
Great company and told a great story or two. He will be greatly missed by many.

Very sad. I loved his lunchtime show in the 70s and still have, on cassette somewhere, a recording I made of his final programme before his move to the US.

Then loved his R2 Drive Time Show with Sally ‘Traffic’ Boseman and finally after replacing his friend Steve Harley on Sounds of the 70s for a further 10+ years.

It had been clear for some time that his lung disease was worsening and no surprise this Autumn when he finally had to stop. Also no surprise that he’s not survived long since.

A great broadcaster and lots of stuff still on BBC Sounds including one where he and Tony Blackburn recall their days as opposing pirates -London v Caroline. I confess I was more London but the spirit of Caroline when they stayed broadcasting after most closed is another epic moment.

What a very sad year for broadcasting legends signing off
RIP Johnnie - one of the very best

The main DJ of my life. Started listening to music with Caroline then progressed to Radio One before moving over to Radio Two and had the luxury of hearing Johnnie's soothing voice and great taste in music nearly all my life.
His Sounds of The 70s was the icing on the cake to a wonderful career and admit, at 69 years of age, to having tears in my eyes as I listened to his final Sunday show and his wonderful sign off,
RIP Johnnie Walker, Britain's greatest ever DJ

My wife just reminded me that he was the guest DJ at the nightclub 41 years ago when we met , she also reminded me that i was chomping on a cucumber that he had given out to participants to some game or other which she found funny enough to make a second date so God Bless - Thankyou and R.I.P.

Very sad indeed .

I spent the summer of 81 working in Washington DC and was delighted to find that he had a daytime show on a local FM station. He seemed to have been given complete freedom to play what he wanted so it was much more varied than what you got on other stations.
