John Piercy

i can't work it out in my head.

chippy is consistently good
harty i like
piercy is apparently brilliant
reid 'looks the part'
jonesy is, obviously, great.
oatway can do a job.

yet why did we only create 4 chances in our enitire playoff campaign?

i like all the above players, but maybe we need a completely new midfield? i know we can't afford it though.

Full Harris, it's not that difficult to work out. We deliberately set out to make those games tight and nullify any advantage our opponents might have had in midfield. McGhee's plan worked perfectly. We can't then at the same time complain about not making enough chances - it would have been far riskier for us to have taken part in open, flowing games.

I really can't see McGhee being able to totally transform the way the team play that quickly. We are going to have to get used to the semi-beautiful style of football we play. I don't believe there is that big a gulf in class between the top 8 in Div 2 and the bottom 8 in Div 1, playing the same style will allow us a consolidation period and give McGhee time to pursue options for change in the medium to long-term.

We will start the next season with the same defence (give or take the rumours about Virgs, although El Abd would do fine in his place). This is not really a "footballing" defence, is it? It does its job well, in fact at times, brilliantly, but its not going to support our midfield to build passing attacks.

Charlie has to sit in front of them, he is perfect for this style of football. Then next to him it will be either Chippy or Reid. Chippy's op will give Reid a chance. I think Jonah deserves more chances, he has done well over the past couple of months. Piercy will continue to be a headache for McGhee, but a good one, because it's just not clear what his best position is, either midfield or further forward. Rodger, we'll have to see what the injury has done to him, fingers crossed.

McGhee I don't think quite knows his best midfield combination yet but he has time now to work it out. I think we will still play very direct but hopefully the direct passing will be more efficient and less aimless than it has been on occasions.

Credit to Big Chris for the lovely bit of skill that got us the penalty and promotion, but there are question marks over how many chances he needs to do something like that, we desperately need another striker to link better with Leon particularly to hold the ball, create time for the midfielders to get forward, and then play the efficient pass.

Next year will be tough but we will still have the disorientating factor for the opposition of Withdean and McGhee is a clever enough tactician to grind out the 50pts we need to stay up. But I don't see us playing too differently than we have been for the past 6 months. We will get slaughtered by the better footballing sides if we attempt to play a more open style.

I hope Albion fans get a little bit less snobbish about our style and recognise we have to cut our coat according to our cloth. The kind of control that the likes of Cullip, Oatway and Chippy can put on a game is not "rubbish" football - it may not be pretty to watch but it can render opposition sides impotent and allow us to use our strikers to seize the advantage. Please search your vocabulary for better synonyms than "rubbish".

Hope he gets more of a run in the team. We could have a wonderful midfield next year.

Chippy, Reid, Piercy, Rodger, Hart, Jones, Oatway.....
That is a truly dreadful midfield by Div 1 standards.

Im begining to understand what certain players are saying about him being a class act.

.... but McGhee obviously doesn't agree as he is only prepared to offer him a contract to October to give him a chance to make an impression.

Possibility of losing him if another club makes a better off?

Oatway, right do not want to overly slag him off, but he is limited in Div 2 if we play him next season we are in trouble. Last time in that division the number of games that passed him by due to lack of pace and footballing brain was embarrasing. I know he has a year left on his contract, but I do feel the club should say that if somebody comes in for him he can go. I do not even feel he should be on the bench next season.

Regarding the midfield, if Jolly comes through pre-season he should be a started. He does a rare thing for a midfielder at the Albion, puts his foot on the ball and passes it to a team mate, however it is whether he will get over the injury. It then comes down to Reid or Chippy for the other central slot. Jolly and Chippy with Brooker in front of them did not disgrace themselves last time we were in this league.

I have to say I would be inclined to look at playing 5-3-2 like we did last time we were in Division 1, probably with Cullip, Blackwell and Virgo in the middle, then Harding (although expect a Mayo comeback, it always happens) and either Hinsh or (I cannot believe I am saying this) Watson on the right.

Midfield of Carpenter, Jolly and Piercy, then Knight and I guess Iwelumo up front. Now this is working with what we have got, however it seems McGhee wants 4 new players, plus we have to use the season long loans properly this time, so the line up is likely to be an awful lot more different to the one that people are predicting.

How about a five man midfield with just Leon up front on his own (like we used to with Bobby)? It'll get rid of this horrible long ball mentality that pervades at the club now. I'm not one for all this "we need a target man" bollocks, thats just crappy british mentality.

My midfield for next year:

Hart Reid Chippy Piercy Jones.

That looks class - you can't deny it.

It's more like McGhee has given him 3 months to improve his attitude.

If either Watson or Mayo return to first team action next season, I'll be seriously disappointed in McGhee's judgement. Mayo might just be an OK sub but I wouldn't let Watto anywhere near the bench let alone the starting line up. We have moved on since - let's not go backwards again.

Piercy is a cracking player but I think McGhee is right to ask him to improve his approach. McGhee has so far proved an excellent man manager, so why doubt him now?

But to have offered him the same short term contract as David Lee is nothing short of insulting.

Why? You do not know what they are like in training. Lee may turn up on time every day and work his arse off where as rumours on here suggest Piercy has an alcohol problem and is lazy.

But isn't it more important what they do on the pitch Ritchie? Frank Worthington was reknown for liking a tipple but it didn't affect his performance on the field. I know what you mean though.

i normally think you talk alot of sense uncle buck but not here i do generally agree with your team but watson and mayo's time is definately up it's taken long enough to get rid of them and get full backs that can defend without returning to our old ways again!.as for charlie we all know he's not up to div 1 standard but he empithies the team spirit we are for ever hearing about so i certainally wouldn't even consider getting rid of him cos if things go wrong we will need him in the dressing room espcailly if danny were to go but a team of virgo, blackwell, and culip in the centre hinch and harding at full back with chippy, jolly and piercy in midfield and leon and big chris up front looks fine to me obviously that may change if mcghee brings in the players he wants

I agree. Mayo was voted the runner up in Player of the season in the First division.

He will be back and he will manage to make the grade. He was the only player that played in every selection that Coppell made.
Admittedly some players were out through injury but it tells you something about Kerry's commitment.
