Just far enough away from LDC
He (like lord carrington) offered his resignation when the Falklands were invaded. Mrs thatcher didn't accept his.

Politicians with principles eh

So Robin Day was right; definitely a “gone tomorrow politician” now…

To be or NOTT to be.

R.I.P. John. A great flounce, and totally warranted. Up there with Clive Anderson and The Bee Gees.

Interesting eulogies about him having principles and being resolute in defending the Falklands and so on. My memory was that it was his paper setting out the withdrawal of the Endurance from the area that basically encouraged the Argentinians to invade. I seem to recall at the time that it was felt a little as though he had played a part in manufacturing the conflict which directly led to Thatcher staying in power.
