In my view;

Commentators - Sam matterface rubbish as is Vicky sparks.

Pundits - Michael owen, jermaine jenas and glenn hoddle, annoying and rubbish as is eni oluko

Kelly sommers, laura woods, dan walker, gary lineker, mark pougatch, alex scott all good anchors

Emma hayes, nedum onouah, Alan shearer all great pundits

Whether someone is good or bad at their job is nothing to do with race or gender. Making either of those a criteria to define who is good or bad as a group is Prejudice. End of.
Excellent post (although I don't rate shearer at all)

This is a great list. I'd just add "Merse" to the list of bad pundits and say Karen Carney isn't for me Clive (but I know others like her when we've discussed this). I like 'token Scotsman' Ally McCoist as a pundit too. Again, he might divide the room, but I think he's one of the best. Everything else you've written is bang on the money
Good point about Ally McCoist. He's very good.

This is the overriding problem(?) with the whole debate, which has seemingly sprung up out of nowhere: it's all subjective. Between just two posters, you've given your personal preferences, while also indicating that others will not share the same view. Therefore, there are not 'bad' commentators, pundits, etc, just ones that some people like and others don't. That's fine – it literally is what it is.

To add further weight to it, I can't stand Clive Tyldsley or Andy Townsend, but they get a lot of work and I know for a fact that loads of people DO like them.

When it comes to that twat Joey Berkton, he just has an issue with women, plain and simple. I'm not quite sure what his overall aim is – or where he thinks this is going to end, but nothing will change from it and there will continue to be male and females across both men's and women's football. Beyond that, he seems intent on asking people to 'cancel' him or threaten to sue him. What a totally and uttlerly bizarre individual he really is.

He had nothing to lose from exiting the mainstream anyway. He'll now go on to be a hero of the the GB lot casting himself as a tribune of the silent majority and sticking up for Andrew Tate on twitter

Taking a step back from the pundit debate, it might be worth taking a birds-eye view of Joey Barton's recent actions.

He has lobbed a few grenades. He knew that they would be incendiary. Numerous people, newspapers, ITV, Jeremy Vine and Gary Neville have responded.
He then posted a distinctly odd, verbose tweet at 5.55am on Sunday, included thinly veiled threats to female football pundits, and black people.

Next thing we hear, is he's off on holiday. He could well have made his early Sunday morning tweet just before his flight.

He is a disruptor. Stir things up. Create a bit of chaos. Then watch all the fun from a distance.

He's also a nasty little shit.

On the whole pundit thing, I don't get the obsession with having "played the game". I want analysis from a pundit and generally people who've played the game tend to trot out tired old tropes based on when they played anywhere between 30 years ago and today. In most cases, they don't understand the rules and offer opinions simply to get social media views.

The best pundits are actually those who are a bit more detached. I'd far rather listen to journalists who've watched the game for 30 years and, genuinely, I don't care about gender as long as they're good.

This whole "only men can comment on the men's game" is purely lowest common denominator nonsense designed to get knuckle draggers angry enough to like tweets, engage in content and listen to the little sh!thousers podcast.

Back in the early days of Sky (I think) there was a regular round-table discussion on football by journalists, hosted I recall by the late Brian Woolnough(?), and it was far more informative than 90% of the ex-footballer punditry

Our Joey is this morning calling himself a lone wolf, and claiming that he's got:

'the Woke, the Race Hustlers, the Gender Hustlers, the Covid hustlers on f***ing toast'.

While he's on holiday. Happy hols!

Mark chapman would be a better pundit than the vast majority and on motd2 he usually adds more in terms of punditry as presenter than the actual pundits.

No Joey. What you’ve got is the vast majority of the population who have read your recent stuff confirming their view that you’re an insufferable bellend
