Agreed but Bournemouth have money(?) so may not need to sell and would want more than the release clause?,

They can't, that is what a release clause is. If we meet it they have to agree to sell at that price. However it doesn't mean that the player will agree personal terms, or that another club will come sniffing around too. If they didn't want to sell him they shouldn't have put that clause in the contract.

They can also re-negotiate with the player themselves and either remove the clause or increase it if he agrees.

True. But if he fancies a crack at the Prem via the play-offs he's hardly likely to agree to those changes.

That would effectively be a new contract though, and he would likely want a hefty price rise and a nice signing-on fee to compensate for the loss of flexibility.

Howe saying Grabban is central to his plans for this season. Looks like they will play hard ball if we come in with an offer, and presumably would want a replacement in if we were successful. All speculation of course.
If there's a release clause of £1.1 Million, there's not alot Mr Howe can do if the player wants to go!

Exactly. It's not relevant that Bournemouth don't need to sell him, it's not up to them if there's a release clause.

All that means is that the player could turn us down, which of course he could.

The fact is, a release clause means it's not up to Bournemouth. They can simply offer him money to stay, but he doesn't have to accept it.

Yup. There will always be bigger sharks in the pool. Take it as a complement that other clubs are interested - shows you're moving in the right direction.

Agreed - will be a blow if he does go, as he's decent and fits our play pefectly - and a replacement will be hard to find.
We have had some brilliant news though, Joe Roach is back in our youth set up - the man who developed Vokes, Ings, Pitman, Hayter etc..

I'd rather we go after Joe Mason for £600k than spunk £1.1m plus signing on fee plus wages on some noddy player from Bournemouth.

Grabban is much more suited to our style of play in my opinion. And could play anywhere in our front 3.

Agree with this, he sounds like a much better all round proposition anyway, especially if he comes with Conway. Best to leave Eddie Howe and his parochial little club to carry on living in their virtual fantasy world!

Given we only play one up front...who is more likely to take over say Spanish Daves role (if we want to keep a speedy wide man like lua lua) or sit on the bench....£1mill for Grabb. to be a bench warmer? Hmm......then of course CMS cost even more and could be say on the bench even after he is 'properly' fit

Who's said 600k for Mason?! Cardiff seem to think he's worth more than that?!

But if that Noddy player helps us get promoted...however I don't think the club will be willing to spend £1.1 million with FFP looming large on the horizon, particularly in the January transfer window which Tony has already said he doesn't like doing business in.

Didn't we splash the cash on Leo in the transfer window?

Yes admittedly but that doesn't neccessarily mean Tony likes doing business in this window. In any case, as a club we're tightening our purse strings more and more due to FFP

You all seem quite happy to take the word of the person on another message board who quoted a buy-out clause of £1.1 million but ignored the other on the same board that quoted it at £2.2 million. I have some news on that, and you can take this at face value or ignore it, I don't really mind. I'm afraid they're both wrong.

1. Grabban *did* have a buy-out clause of £1.1 million. Hence the reason a new contract was negotiated sharply in November when his form took off in the Championship

2. The new contract does have a clause in it but I believe it is slightly north of £2.5 million. There wouldn't have been much point in giving him a new contract if we didn't try to protect the investment

3. What my source didn't know is the exact wording of that clause but they understand it's a little less than straightforward. Speculating that could means lots of things from just that AFCB have to consider the offer (like Suarez at Liverpool), or that he has to be informed of the offer and allowed to talk to the club or it could be that it has to be accepted if other conditions are met, for instance if made by a club in the Premiership or in a promotion position

A quick scan of your board shows that you had plenty of people valuing Barnes at about £1.5 million and yet he only had six months left on his contract. Yet many also seem to think Grabban isn't worth £1 million. Football fans are a funny lot :)

It's the same on every message board and with every clubs fans though so I guess nothing unusual.

As an aside, if any of you can be bothered go to an AFCB forum and go back in history to before the start of this season. I'd say Grabban was a player written off as a Championship player by virtually all our fans before a ball was kicked. Just shows how wrong we can be as fans. He's undoubtedly shown he is Championship class and could just be the player to push you over the line. However, you won't get him on the cheap and from the chat here, it sounds like you don't want to spend the money. Especially if Mason is available for £600k.

Good luck and so forth. I think this is a consolidating season for us and next season we'll really see what we're made of at this level. I'm hoping that's a positive thing and that we won't be left in a dog-fight at the bottom.
