Good on him, really like the way he is turning into a subversive campaigning comedian like Mark Thomas.

Money very well "spent" to highlight the hypocrisy.

Saying the money could have gone to charity is an odd point. He could have spent 10 times more with a PR company with little effect and that wouldn't have gone to a charity either.

Incidentally, he's also raised more for charity with other stunts that most of those criticising him would give in a lifetime.

The real story should be about Beckham and how we should be long tired about his dubious associations with whatever for personal promotion.
But to have the arrogance of destroying £10k for promoting something everybody already knows about is just a waste. Beckham appears never to have cared a shit about anything other than self promotion and making money. The only thing this episode may have helped him with is not getting a knighthood (with nothing to do with Lycett) - my fingers are crossed on this one.

JL is a twat. Why waste £10k when he could give it to an appropriate charity and challenge Beckham to do likewise.
I’ve always found Beckham to extremely self centred, taking great care to promote himself to the full. How many photos did he bomb into when he was playing? anything he does is for self promotion or money. He’s so good at it he got himself a knighthood. Yes, he queued up to see the Queen laying in state - so did millions of others who didn’t get the same level of praise. He was a good player too - once upon a time.
Beckham was the first player to realise that a player could become a business and transcend 90 minutes on a football pitch. He's got untold wealth and fame but sold his soul and that of his children too. He was never going to interact with Lycett and risk The Brand.

Beckham as an England player always gave 100%. The free kick against Greece in a the 2002 qual and pen against Argentina live long in the memory.

But he really f**ked up in taking the money from the Qataris. He's damaged goods now

He made a challenge and put £10k up of his money, the point being that money had over ridden Beckhams moral compass. If he had said he would put £10k to a charity, or just keep it, we all would have said that his money was never at risk, because no way was Beckham going to change anything.
Some things are more important than money, and that is the message he wanted to send. He made himself a little poorer on principle, as he was asking Beckham to care more for his principles than his bank balance.

awareness of what? the issue is in the press, widely discussed already, doesnt need this daft stunt. the only thing this promoted awareness of is Joe Lycett.
One thing i've seen a LOT of, is people in the replies to his tweets begging him to donate instead to charities, with scores of people underneath those comments saying that they will donate. With the amount of reach this has had I can easily imagine far more than 10k being raised for charities 'in spite' of the stunt.

I doubt Beckham himself had the capacity to ‘realise’ anything of the sort; his dad, his agent, his advisors maybe.

Rumour is Joe Lycett is planning on spending £10k of his own money on a car.

WHY ISN'T HE GIVING THIS TO CHARITY!!!??????
Has he done a self-serving publicity stunt in the build up to spending his money? That's the issue with this, "I'm going to shred 10k!" stunt, not him talking about spending his own money.

Good attempt to draw a parallel though and great attempt to stir the pot.

Interesting isn't it. So many people have an issue with Joe (who was quite clearly never going to shred cash), fewer seem to have an issue with a regime that kills gay people and a gay icon who has taken vast amounts of cash to sportswash. I know what I find more concerning and I'm happy for any celebrity with a bit of a following to put themselves out there to highlight this. Fair play to Alex Scott today too.

Personally I’m appalled by both Qatar and Beckham, but also think JL’s a bit of a knobhead.
