I really don't understand why all of a sudden Joe Cole is supposed to be our saviour? It's almost as though as soon as John Terry said it, England fans jump on the bandwagon and demand he should be playing, as he alone will put us through.

Yes he's a very good player, but none of us have anywhere near the managerial nor tactical experience or knowledge as Fabio Capello. Let's get behind England, whatever the team selection.

I do understand what people are saying regarding Owen but if he'd been given a try in the friendlies for the past two years he might well have scored a few and played himself into contention - isn't that what friendlies are for?

How we could do with a goalscorer now. Look at Argentina's striking options on the bench, we have erm, Heskey and Defoe.

Nope, think you will find a lot of people were saying it before Terry said a word. Comes to something when John Terry is the voice of reason though.
I've said for many years that Cole is our second best player and along with Rooney the only one that can do something unexpected.

But, we've walked through most of the games of the last 2 years, particularly the qualies, with a team where he wasn't needed. Maybe he could have done a job today, maybe not, if the team are as bad as last fri, he wouldn't have got any service anyway.

He's retired.

Owen hasn't exactly been given much of a chance for Man Utd. Crouch doesn't start for Spuds but he scores for England, that's what matters.

crouch started 21 league games for spurs this season, and came on in every other one

owen started 5 for united, coming on in 14. he has averaged just over 11 starts a season since signing for newcastle

if you're not playing regularly for your club, you wont play for your country. you cannot pick a team based on what a player did a few years ago

Why are people talking as if Owen could even have been in this squad? He's injured remember?

Capello just doesn't rate him, which sadly is right. He's past it now. Capello had nothing to do with him leaving Madrid though, seeing as he was Roma manager at the time. Owen left Madrid because they signed Robinho under the Galactico policy and he wouldn't have got a game.

But he had done nothing to deserve a call up.

Chelsea fan I know who has a season ticket has commented on more than one occasion this season on the rare occasions that Cole has played " Joe Cole appears to have forgotten how to play football"

Fit right in then, get him on the pitch today.

Credit to Cappello here. Last night, the whole of the MOTD team agred on a starting XI including Cole and excluding Defoe. What happens? Defoe looked great, Joe Cole looked leggy and lost. If nothing else, people should get off Cappello's back for getting this right.

Indeed, at no stage did Joe Cole look likely to assist with getting that vital 2nd goal. And what happened to the key thing about this world cup being pace, or bringing on a speed merchant to exploit the opposition's tired legs?

I do like Capello but hate these weird vendettas he has against players - first Owen now Cole.

vendetta

He`s not head of the Mafia, he just prefers Milner or whoever.
I hope he keeps the same starting 11 for the next match.

would this be the left/right winger Joe Cole brought on to fill a gap behind the forward? not great, but i wouldnt judge on that cameo. would rather have seen him come on to the left and Gerrard move to the hole.

maybe in a diamond with two forwards, ot the advanced midfielder in 451, but i'm not sure about him playing as the withdrawn forward.

One of the oddest subs I've ever seen. Rooney off, J Cole on. Didn't make an awful lot of sense to me.

Cole looked really poor. But then he hadn't featured in the last 2 games so maybe needs more time to settle in. Time is something he's unlikely to get though
