I thought that the law had changed so that denial of goal scoring opportunity meant a pen but no red card? Is that something that only applies to England?
You thought wrong. It is still a red card in certain circumstances. If the referee thinks that there has been a genuine attempt to play the ball - a mis-timed tackle for example - then it is just a yellow. If it is not - holding for example - then it is still a red card.

They were in serious jeopardy in that game until the penalty and sending off. Clearly the new law is that it's a penalty and yellow card for a normal foul, but a penalty and a red if the striker just falls over!
